Trying to get my head round this.
We've signed Florentino and Lukic, 2 defensive midfielders.
We've also signed Maeda and Fatawu, and are after Enciso but have also signed Emersonn. So that's 4 attacking players that obviously fit into a 3-1 at the top of the field, leaving only 6 spots for midfield and defence.
So are we playing a 4-2-3-1? What we saw last time was that we were very exposed with Davis playing as a left back. There is pretty universal agreement that he's better as a LWB in the PL (different in Championship where we could get away with him on the left of a 4).
None of it adds up, unless we are going to switch formations, so sometimes we have 3 CBs (O'Shea, Diop, Greaves) with Leif and another RWB, and sometimes we play a 4 across the back (but in that case we need a stronger defensive LB).
Then if we get Palacios or a similar #8, we have 3 in midfield. Is the idea that when out of possession, we drop 2 midfielders into defence?
I've not mentioned other players who will likely be on the bench etc., but the recruitment seems to say we are playing a whole bunch of formations sometimes 4-2-3-1, and 4-3-2-1 and 3-4-2-1. So presumably very fluid formation depending on the opposition, home/away, and how the match is going. Maybe I have it all wrong! |  |

Flexibility and strengthen depth as what I’d suggest we are building.
Regarding your point about leif, KM instructed him to play high and wide, it was a clear and obvious part of the tactic when in possession but it was exploited in the Premier League last time out. That doesn’t mean leif cannot play a more defensive role. |  |

I liked how we set up against Rayo and hope thats what we go for at home/winnable games. Back 4 out of possession shifting to a 3 with Leif bombing on.
Seen plenty of comments about us needing to sign a RWB but I just don't see how that works with signing Fatuwa for the right side as he seems very much hug the touchline and cut in with the ball. I think if we have 3 CB out of possession then it's a solid defensive RB we need rather than a right footed Leif. | | | |

You are forgetting that Maeda is possibly the best presser in World Football. The opposition RB and RW will have very little time on the ball.
Edit: autocorrect turned Maeda into Mazda. Could be quite a good nickname for him, though! [Post edited 12 Aug 8:05]

I see a lot of comments saying we need a RB, but do we need a LB ( as cover)? Or a LWB?
Or will it be Johnson or Greaves as cover?
Still a few signings and outgoings to go. I can see this going to the end of the window where we can't bring in anybody until we get rid of a body or two. | | | |

Feels like we are getting closer to a final squad. Probably ~17 players considered "first choice" with a another ~9 as back up.
First Choice:
Gk/Def: Scherpen, O'Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis, NEW*
Mid: Matusiwa, Luis, Lukic, NEW
Att: Fatawu, Enciso, Maeda, Clarke, Philogene**
ST: NEW, Emersonn
Back up:
Gk/Def: KVO, Walton, Kipre, NEW LB
MID: One of Taylor, Nunez, Humphreys
Att: Walle Egeli, McAteer
ST: Akpom
*If DOS is going to play RB/RCB then less likely we need both a new RB and new CB. But feels like we need one of the other.
**Obvious questions around whether Jaden will be here at the end of the window. Could be replaced if he goes, or see Walle Egeli step up to the "starters" and Mehmeti stay as back up. Could see this one being an opportunistic deadline day loan deal. | | | |

I think GON is going to be more flexible in his formation, than McKenna was so we need options.
If we get injuries we need players who can step in. Also the players we’ve brought it seem to be a step up from the players we already had in.
No issues with the players we’ve brought in and what positions they play in. The squad needs to have some depth to it something we struggled with last time we got promotion. | | | |

We needed to add quality in almost every position; O'Neill's made it clear we aren't close to being finished in the market. Recently he said something along the lines of wanting "quite a few" more in, with incomings anticipated before the season opener and through to the end of the window. The intention is to assemble a squad that may compete, rather than for every player bought to be viewed as a guaranteed starter. This is perhaps most clearly expressed in us buying two keepers.
So a very tough ask imo to predict his preferred formations based on business conducted so far. | | | |
