Even as someone who only gardens at home, I haven't been out doing the sort of things I would normally do, eg. cutting back, strimming.

One thing I've particularly noticed this year is established trees, bushes and shrubs dying off.
In particular, I have recently noticed that what I think is an Italian Cyprus has died off. It is around 15 feet high, and had I known earlier I might have been able to water it, hosepipe ban permitting.
Perhaps it doesn't help that the soil is clay but the water table is normally quite high because I live near a stream.
I might add that a combination of frosts and sunny weather over a period of about a month or so in spring killed off a well-established Magnolia tree a few years ago. [Post edited 13 Aug 10:02]

Have spent the morning trying to save trees with a bowser and buckets. Plant whips I said but he went with medium/large root ball trees with no irrigation. Oh well what's a few £k here and there!! | |

Couple of weeks ago was working with a digger driver on an extremely hot day ( well, for the West of Ireland anyway). He was probably in his mid 50,s and wasn't really in prime condition. A tad overweight and probably a stranger to any kinda exercise.
Just after 2 in the afternoon I had to send him off to get more refreshments and a rest from the sun. The temperature inside the machine was incredible, a mixture of the greenhouse effect of the glass cabin and the heat of the large engine directly behind it.
Was genuinely concerned for yer man, his head was bright red and he'd already drunk the 4 litres of liquids (2 litres of water 2 of coke) he brought to work with him. |  | | |

I believe the building trade closes down in Spain in August, just like many other businesses.

I agree entirely. This summer has been very challenging, as have some of the preceding ones more recently.
Generally can find enough to get me by in the shade or cooler areas of clients gardens but guess at 65, I’m going to have to be more selective in future.
Still, a welcome bit of respite watching some travel vlogs on you tube before getting back to the grind stone tomorrow. | |

Would be a good move in theory. But like you say, nearly all of the people i work with are self employed or working for very small companies. Imagine it would be very difficult to reach agreement to take July off for example.
I fear unfortunately it will take some kinda tragedy before we start taking the issue seriously.

100% we are going to have e to adapt in all sorts of ways.
Couple of things I picked up from Aus recently.
They do before school clubs rather than after school clubs.
They use shutters rather than blinds.
And I read an article in the Guardian earlier highlighting how a heat pump cam also work to cool your home in summer (with some clever addition) which I guess is better for the environment than.AC units... | |

I often work stripping sites prior to construction commencing. There is literally no shade left, im usually absolutely covered in factor 50, but it's still a challenge to avoid sunburn, especially to the back of my already redneck.
Every summer seems to get worse, I think I now prefer working outside in January to July. | | | |

I was thinking more of my brother-in-law who is a brickie.

Driving back on the A1071 from Sudbury the weekend and it felt like Autumn was on its was with trees starting to turn brown/copper/gold in many places. Must just be struggling for water even large established trees... |  |
