Some expansion joints are not butt-welded together. The ends are tapered and designed to slide past each other. Think of a rectangle of 3 feet by the width of the rail. Draw a line from opposite corners and cut into 2 triangles. This allows the rails to slide past each other. |  |

You can produce steel that has a higher resistance to heat but it's expensive. The higher the heat the more expensive. The UK budgeted for about 27C as hot summers in the UK only became a thing 5 years ago. Replacing the rails with higher heat-resistant steel will keep our newly nationalised steel industry busy for years. |  |
