Jason Arday found dead on 13:42 - Aug 21 by DJR

Interesting snippet from this week's Private Eye which has the number of articles in the Times higher than mentioned in my earlier post.

"A feeding frenzy began: Chris Evans' Telegraph published 71 stories in three weeks and Tony Gallagher's Times ran 60. This enthusiasm reflected appetites: in 2026 both papers are driven not only by editorial opinions but also by digital data for what gets clicks (whether approvingly or disapprovingly bestowed).

This resulted in a swift descent from valid questions about Cambridge and other universities' due diligence efforts to such desperate pieces as the Time's 9 August revelation that the student paper had not published anything on Arday (in the middle of the summer holidays), or an anonymous complaint from a former student that he had given her a mere 70 percent mark. The latter did such good numbers that the Times purchased social media adds to promote it."

Do these guys have previous? I don’t read the times. Partly because it’s behind an effective paywall and secondly on the right it’s nicknamed “Pravda”

Like you, I don't read it because it's behind a paywall.

But it doesn't seem anything like the paper it was 40 odd years ago when I did read it.

However, I do get the impression (perhaps wrongly) that the Sunday Times has better maintained its standards, not least because it does a lot of good investigative journalism.

I know much more about the Telegraph because a friend gave me a bonus subscription for a time, and I can if I choose read it for free on Press Reader through a library subscription. That paper certainly is nothing like what it once was.

More generally, the need to chase clicks does seem to have affected the quality and nature of much of the printed media, with even the Guardian seeming to join in the witch hunt after Arday resigned.

The need for clicks is depressing isn't it? But then given people are very reluctant to pay for good journalism, that's what the market is.

To link two threads, im missing Rod Liddle today......I bet his column would have been amusing today!

Equally worrying is the even more severe decline of local journalism especially at a time when devolution is at the top of the Burnham agenda.

OK, that has basically nothing to do with the Spectator article I was referencing?

Also "unpleasant" is a very mild way to put it.

it has everything to do with the spectator article. that article is about cofnas's substack. the substance of that substack is true and proven. ghent can't discipline someone for publishing stuff which is demonstrated to be true. yes cofnas adds a spin about dei, but that is also within the realm of legitimate opinion (one i disagree with). that's what toby young's spectator article is about - you read it, yes?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

This is such a pivotal aspect of free speech though, which is what the Spectator is referring to.

The fact that Cofnas holds 'unpleasant' (or pick whatever adjective needed) doesn't mean he doesn't have a right to free speech on any other issue as long as that is within the law. I don't like it, I am just arguing that the principle is more important than this individual.

I have now read through Will Self's article. It's completely objectionable and falls into all the usual traps of labelling people he doesn't agree with and wanting to shut them down. But he's been doing that for 20 years +

"Bad" people can be right sometimes is what I would say.

The modern obsession with removing views from the debate if they are held by someone who has said/done something objectionable/vile (in somebody's opinion) is just making that discussion less likely to come to the best conclusion.

Oh fook off with the condescension, yes I read it.

It comes across as a whiny piece about how poor old Cofnas might get fired now his views are once again being evaluated.

Ghent has sheepishly come out and said their against racism, saying "[they] respect for human dignity and opposes discrimination, hatred and racism".

Funny that wasn't taken into account when they hired him, his views were well known.

If you take the single substack post in absolute isolation then yes, the Spectator article would indeed be correct.

Except it's missing the very obvious context of what's gone on and who Cofnas is.

Even the article betrays who he is.

At the vigil for Arday at Trafalgar Square on Sunday, several speakers singled out Cofnas for blame, including Diane Abbott MP, who described him as a ‘racist’.

Hmmm, odd thing to include for someone who argues that black people are genetically inferior to white people.

your first reply to me was "OK, that has basically nothing to do with the Spectator article I was referencing?" and then you get upset when you get the exact same style back.

so in terms of "Oh fook off with the condescension", really take a look at yourself first and stop with the preciousness.

why ghent hired him in the first place is a good question for ghent. what they are saying now is that they are considering disciplining him for his recent substack about arday. there is no reasonable justification for that - what cofnas wrote was true. that isn't to defend anything else cofnas has said beyond that.

yes, the spectator article was about that specific substack article and ghent's action relating to that specific substack article. yes, my post was directly related to the spectator article - despite your first reply.

now, what are you going to get precious about with this reply? perhaps it's just people thinking differently to you that you dislike?

This wasn’t a case of someone seeking redemption and turning a new leaf though. He’s a vile racist and will have been motivated by that racism in this case. We’re treading a very precarious path if we start legitimising the view of people like him under the defence of free speech. As he’s found before and is now finding again, free speech doesn’t mean free of consequences.

free speech isn't about the character of the speaker, it's ony about what they say. (insert some bastardised version of voltaire here). someone may be entirely wrong about many things but, legally and morally, that doesn't limit their right to speak about other things. accepting the things people say that are correct doesn't in any way legitimise things they might say which are incorrect.

"he’s now finding again that free speech doesn’t mean free of consequences." i suspect there will be no consequence in the ghent case because he has the ultimate defence - what he said was demonstrably true.

Exactly,

The motives are to a large extent irrelevant and in any case you either believe in free speech or you don't. Free speech means allowing people to say offensive things and even blatantly lie. If you can't defeat them in debate then you have to question your own beliefs and understanding.

Even though what he said was true, it won't save him. Our noble desire to eliminate discrimination impacts other values we have held for years. For me, that this is the key argument from the right.

It's a good reason why trial by jury terrifies me. The only reason you would want a jury trial is if you did it.

I was saying the Spectator article was awful for missing very obvious context as to who Cofnas is, his motivations and carefully skirting round is obviously awful views and just pitting this as a guy asking questions. You're just laser focused on treating that article entirely at face value and ignoring everything else.

Noticed you ignored the bits where I referenced the bits I found objectionable.

I'll get precious about people defending racists whilst they act like racists whilst calling their views merely "unpleasant".

EDIT: I'm just gonna drop from this thread, I can't be arsed with it, we're obviously not going to agree and go round in circles.

That’s a very harsh thing to write.

Nobody is defending racists, certainly now Lowhouse. It’s the principle of free speech that is more central to the argument in the spectator and if you believe in it, it’s difficult to suspend Cofnas for telling the truth.

It’s more handwriging. The university have know about his views on race since hiring him, so why chose now. I think that’s part of what winds people up about DEI.

I noted how difficult some people have calling a racist, racist. And a misogynist, a misogynist.

“ Liberty consists in the freedom to do everything which injures no one else; hence the exercise of the natural rights of each man has no limits except those which assure to the other members of the society the enjoyment of the same rights. These limits can only be determined by law”

People always bang on about Voltaire, and forget what John Mills said about harm.

Racists being racist, acting out of their racism, causes harm, they shouldn’t be held up as some sort of beacon of Free Speech.

Jeez, People like Toby Young seem to need to use quotes around the word racist, for someone that basically said, black people are dummer than whites but can run fast.

for the edited addition at the end i refer again you again to your "Oh fook off with the condescension"

the article is a defence of cofnas' right to critique another academic's work and his right to publish things that are demonstrably true. it is saying that he is being attacked and scapegoated (in the current world in a potentially very dangerous way) and denied that right not because of what he correctly wrote about araday but because of his other views that people disagree with. you are right that i am 'laser focused' on the what the article author is saying.

for various reasons i've had to read cofnas' other work - and i strongly disagree with it. it doesn't alter the fact that he has a right to freely publish, within the law and without denying the rights of others, and to express his views, including his views on arday. defending that right is not 'people defending racists' - and to start framing free speech in that way is very dangerous.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

A good quote you post there from Mill. The limits being determined by law, isn’t that the principle Toby Young is defending? It can’t be illegal to tell the truth.

We can all agree to hate racism. I would defend the right for Cofnas to say what he wants and face the consequences. The handwringing element is the universities attempt to cover itself for appointing him in the first place.

Free speech has to stand above our personal opinion, otherwise it isn’t free at all. What happens when you face action for something you believe to be true? It’s happened in societies for as long as humans have been around

free speech legislation - including human rights law and european convention rights - obviously deals with harm, and yes there are consequent limits to free speech. but harms has to be real and objective - it can't just be upset, offence or political disagreement. there is no right not to be offended. direct harassment or clear incitement would be examples, if proven, of 'harm'. careful balancing of rights and harms need to be demonstrated and any consequent restriction necessary and reasonable. weaponising imagined 'harm' as a political tool to silence people who hold different views from yours is repressive.

Suicide not enough harm for you?

A racist at a university basically saying black people are dumber than white people but can run fast, is just repeating a racist trope that has been harming black people for 100’s of years and still causes problems today.

Racism isn’t a view. It is a scourge.

Lowhouse and Balcombe spending a lot of time and energy making sure the views of very prominent white supremacists are being taken into account. And also explaining how the right of very privileged white people to write “challenging” and controversial think pieces is as important as the right for all races to be treated equally and not face discrimination.

don't be silly. using someone's suicide in that way is distasteful.

you don't seem to be able to separate things you disagree with from things people should be prevented from saying - which is the first step on the path to repression.

that in the USA there are persistent differences in average iq between different racial groups is an established fact. on average, groups who have asian or jewish ancestry score higher than the group with white ancestry, so even that established data doesn't fit any simple claim of 'racism'. the debate is whether that data is explained by environmental factors or heredity, and whether iq measures are objective and relevant to measured outcomes. to me environmental factors seem most critical and, in any case, measured iq seems a limited determinant of outcomes. but, this is still more complex than your desire to shout 'racist' at people you disagree with.

Society hey, lots of people believed that being gay was wrong and it used to be illegal.

That’s changed, but prejudice still exists.

Racism is a scourge on society. But let’s be kind to the professor that thinks black people are dumber than whites, but they can run fast. And make sure we don’t call him a racist.

There was a group of people that did science to prove Jews were inferior. Of course that sort of free speech should be respected as well I suppose.

I think you must have missed the part where Toby paid to defend the guy being able to say blacks can run fast but are dumber than whites, and can be good entertainers.

Really, that’s where we are, let’s make absolutely certain we protect the rights of the person saying black people maybe dumber than whites, but they sure can dance and sing and run.
Sure no harm will come of that.

free speech isn't the problem, the problem is that elements of the rightwing press disproportionately promote hate speech and racism.

there are things that shouldn't be promoted, hate preachers like cofnas, piers corbyn, rupert lowe, anjem choudary shouldn't be getting platformed on mass market media
