Mum passed away in February and our solicitor advised us to leave them in until her house was sold. Agreed and with house completion at the end of last month finalised, they began the process of selling the premium bonds immediately.
The executor of the will has been told that this could take three months as there is a backlog of cases being processed but I’m getting mixed information looking online as to this being the case and can be as little as a couple of weeks.
Any one have any experience with this or are more informed than me could give me an inkling of the situation. |  |

Not particularly recent experience but when I sold some about 3 years ago I think it took around 2-3 weeks for the proceeds to appear. |  | | |

Don't recall it taking anything like that long when we had to sell my mother's as part of the probate/proving the will after she died. |  |

There is a fair backlog apparently. Just been talking to the executor and he was told that it is likely to be 3 months from the end of July before it’s sorted.
Read an article about this and an extra 100 staff recruited to deal with the issue. | |

When my dad died 18 months ago they said you can keep them and keep winning off them for a year after the person dies, with the proceeds going to the next of kin (my mum). So that's what she did, got a few wins off them, then got the full amount for them shortly after a year passed. So if you're not in a rush for the money, it's something worth considering. |  |

I cash in bonds semi regularly for one reason or another - normally takes 3-4 working days. Have never known it to take more than a week or so |  |

We’ve had a couple of moderate wins but we just want to draw a close to proceedings hence instructing the solicitors to get the ball rolling.

Same. Sold some last month and dosh came through in a few days.
This was with a login rather than old paper ones which might take longer I guess. |  |

Sorry to hear of your loss.
Premium bonds are often encashed without probate being granted or produced to NS & I. So you might be able to get them out pretty quick as others have suggested within a few weeks. The probate process is a long one but not every estate needs a grant of probate i.e if the assets are under 25,000. I would ask your solicitor to try and get them encashed without the probate….. |  | | |
