So are we happy with this squad and starting 11?? 12:13 - Sep 1 with 1910 viewsunstableblue

So with time ticking away, Flemming looking certain and some exits expected. Are we happy with these first 11s:

———————Scherpen
OShea—-Diop—-Greaves—-Davis
————Lukic—Pallacios
Fatawu———-Enciso——Maeda
————-——-Flemming

Or

———————Scherpen
——-OShea—-Diop—-Greaves
Ouatarra——Lukic—Pallacios—-Davis
—————-Enciso——Maeda
————-——-Flemming

(Given Liverpools ridiculous firepower I think we’ll see the second Friday)

And a bench of:

Walton
Furlong
Kipre
Ouatarra/Fatawu
Nunez
Florentino/Matusiwa
Clarke/Philogene
Egeli/McAteer
Emersonn/Akpom

With Mehmeti and Taylor retained as don’t think additional CB and LB are in plan, with Palmer maybe also staying. See details below:

Goalkeepers:
1. Scherpen (26)
2. Walton (30)
3. Palmer - or a new 3rd keeper??

RWB/RB:
U21 Ouatarra (20)
4. Furlong (30)

Centre Backs:
5. O’Shea (27)
6. Diop (29)
7. Greaves (25)
8. NEW Left CB
9. Kipre (29)

LWB/LB
10. Davis (26)
11. NEW LB

Centre Mids
12. Lukic (29)
13. Florentino (26)
14. Matusiwa (28)
15. PALACIOS (27)
16. Nunez (26)

Attacking Mids:
17. Fatawu (22)
18. Maeda (28)
19. Enciso (22)
U21 Egeli (20)
20. J. Clarke (25)
21. Philogene (24)
22. McAteer (24)

Strikers:
23. Flemming
24. Emersonn (22)
25. Akpom (30)

Do you really think he has the physical attribute to play that role in the PL?
On Sunday Fatawu looked to be far superior to JP in that sense. Much quicker, stronger.

I don't think we have a choice. And I'm happier with Philogene covering the right than our back up situations in defence right now.

Yeah, let's roll with it. Still think there might be a surprise before the deadline closes, but if not we've had a good window.

17 games until the half way stage and Jan window. Lets try to win 6 of them and we'll be in a very good position.

Yes people need to remember the January window

I think Lukic, Florentino, Pallacios have given us a very strong central midfield

Diop has made our defence far superior

Enciso and Maeda give us real energy and press

Emersonn and Flemming give us goals

Ouatarra a very strong utility player

I hope he doesn’t end up being a utility player and locks down a position in our starting 11.

Need another defender as have barely strengthened there since the last time we were on the PL.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he isn’t a starting right back in a month

People need to chill.

Woefully short in the 9, Flemming will be a massive upgrade and allow Emersonn to play a supporting role.

Get that done, and some tidying up by way of outbounds, and its been a good window even without any other arrivals. Get Palacios up to speed and lets attack the next 17 games like we have the first 2. We don't need perfection, just need to stick 5 or 6 more W's on the board.

Might be only 20 but 50 games in the French top flight, 10 in Europe and has come through a very strong academy that’s developed starting PL at a young age before.

Hoping he isn’t just used off the bench in positions of need, I think he has all the attributes.

Seems like O’Shea is his RB though.

That's my presumption. Seems an awful lot of money for a utility player. I presumed it was more as a RB but with the added bonus of switching if needed. Physically he looks up to it. Which i presume could mean Diop and OS as starting CBs. Or Diop, Greaves and OS in a 5. Unless of course we do get another one in.

There is simply been no indication that he is willing to play DOS or Diop LCB though, in fact quite the opposite.

It's not perfect, but good enough to be going on with (assuming Flemming or another CF signs today).

It’s early days though. The point about Outtara was that he may become first choice RB in a month. And he’s unlikely to drop O’Shea. So I guess we’ll see…

In most positions but not defence. We simply have a lack of depth, especially at LCB if O'Neil doesn't fancy either O'Shea or Diop at LCB.

The left side of defence is the weakest remaining area (assuming the CF issue is dealt with), tho more in terms of cover at LB then LCB, for me. But that is one of the positions Ouattara can play.

That's because he is happy with Greaves there.

Yes, that's why I've been calling for a centre back who can cover full back if possible, for more depth.

At this point I'd just take an out and out CB though.

We have three defenders in the first XI from the season where our defence capitulated. The midfield should be stronger but fell apart on Sunday, albeit against strong opposition with their tails up. Diop and Greaves were at sixes and sevens I. The middle. It's not unreasonable to expect one more in.

Goalkeeper unsurprisingly shaky at times as he's in a new division behind a new back line but shows promise.
Central midfield excellent.
The ten positions are good and, as long as Flemming joins, decent options up front.
But I don't think I can say defence as an entirety is ok. It's a real worry.

Tho a lot of the reason our defence capitulated in 2024-25 was because of the ineffective midfield ahead of them. All the pressure came straight onto the backline.

Now we have protection which starts right out at the front, with Maeda, Enciso and Fatawu picked especially for their pressing. It's also something Clarke has become good at in the last two years. Then a much stronger/faster/more switched on midfield before the opposition can even get to the defence proper.

I'd have slightly more confidence if I didn't see us fall apart on Sunday in 2024/25 fashion, though am heartened that O'Neil made it the central point of the post match press conference.

That was against ManU, inspired by previous defeat, away at Old Trafford, in foul weather and following a quick one-two of adverse decisions. Which is going to be among the most challenging set of circumstances we will face this season.

Diop. Ouatarra. Kipre. Furlong. Are better defensive additions than we had last time round.

But agree we could do with one more. But we’re running out of runway.

I’m just more focussed on getting Flemming over the line. If that falls through. We’re in trouble.

...who had Morsy and Luongo protecting them, not Lukic and Palacios.

Come on...
