| So we've spent nearly £200m... 15:59 - Sep 3 with 2039 views | Linners | ...and we end up with the 18th most valuable squad in the PL. Liverpool's squad is worth more than three times what ours is, City's and Arsenal's even more. You used to need a miracle to stay up, you now need £200m and a miracle. | | | | |
| So we've spent nearly £200m... on 16:12 - Sep 3 with 1947 views | catch74 | It is crazy, trying to get level with someone like Palace and hope we can slightly better them, Hull (who’ve spent similar) and Coventry. Few other teams who might have a shocker but it £200m certainly doesn’t guarantee safety. | |

Maybe I'm getting old (I am) but it doesn't give you a warm and fizzy feeling does it..?

Contract lengths remaining affect values, Emersonn is valued at about £7m on their basis and Mehmeti at £15m for starters.

It sure doesn't. In some ways I hoped the European super league happened and those clubs whose obsession with money all went, leaving a more sustainable and interesting league for the rest of us.
| So we've spent nearly £200m... on 18:16 - Sep 3 with 1550 views | Guthrum | We've spent that from pretty much a standing start. The other squads have been built and refined over several years. We were never going to match that aggregated value in one hit. In any case, squad value does not directly equate to capability. We proved that ourselves in the Championship in 2023-24. The squads of Leeds and Sunderland were worth less than those of Wolves and West Ham (considerably so, with the latter). | |

| So we've spent nearly £200m... on 18:21 - Sep 3 with 1528 views | OldFart71 | The problem is as a small club you may be able to get one gem for a bargain, maybe two. But you will never get 11. For £20-£30 million you will get a player capable of competing against like for like players in like for like teams. The Man Cities. Utd's, Liverpool,Chelsea's will buy one player for our 3 and up to 6 players. Whilst even amounts nearing £100 million do not guarantee a successful purchase the likelihood must be greater just as a punter putting thousands on an odds on shot is more likely than a punter hoping his couple of quid on a 20/1 will reap rewards. It really is a case of needing to maximize the wins against the other promoted teams and also the ones that float about mid table whilst also being able to pull of the occasional shock. | | | |

It's high level of fees considering we haven't sold much. Sunderland raised 50M in sales and still spent 20M less last year, so that gives some indication of the outlay. This market is nuts though. A lot of these mega deals in the top 6 are apparently financed on private credit as well, which is concerning people as football is obviously very much tied to the markets in that respect. I still don't get the math on Chelsea and United's balance sheet when they are losing 200M a year. Barcolena borrowed 15% of future TV contracts to finance the stadium remodel. Borrowing of future income is always a red flag. That said the global TV contracts just keep getting bigger, so the club and brand name does as a saleable asset as well. The NBC deal in the states alone for the PL is worth billions. Wage inflation in football is a massive problem though. It might actually burst in the next 5 years. [Post edited 3 Sep 18:28]

The inflation is actually accelerating, too, as the Prem and other top divisions are having to compete with mega-wealthy Arab leagues enticing players away.

I bet the gap between our squad value and those of the top teams was just as large. We struck lucky back then (or had good judgement) by having players who could step up. I’m guessing it was easier to do that back then as survival for newly promoted clubs wasn’t as rare as hen’s teeth. [Post edited 3 Sep 22:33]
