Leeds stayed up last season playing attacking football, they had 4 points after 4 games, and one of those was a 5-0 loss to Arsenal which could have easily ended 7 or 8 nil.
Brentford stayed up 6 seasons ago by basically staying with the same squad as they used in the Championship, but many people on this site said you have to spend millions to survive
The point being different approaches can still result in survival, but we're only at game 3.
I find it ironic that Leeds fans are often characterised as moaning morons, but last season they were relaxed after game 4 and four points. The vast majority accepted it was a solid start and with new players it would take time to build up an understanding. |
The further irony is that many fans were opposed to O'Neil's appointment as we anticipated it leading to dull, anti-football tactics in an attempt to grind out results. It was a fear I had but also something I recognised might be necessary. I find the actual approach refreshing but a bit naïve too.
The real tell of it is how many points we get in the next 5-10 league matches. Currently 1 ppg is a solid enough start. Better that and thinks look up. Do worse and we are making life difficult. |  |

Hull have scored three goals. Two were set pieces by centre backs.
Huddersfield started with 7 points from 3 games and then almost went down. What happens when their goals dry up? You could make the same argument for them to any degree but flipped.
We might become a bit more defensive, stop conceding and still score enough. They might start to lose games and then never discover a scoring touch.
It’s far too early to worry about that. We’ve played three games each. For all we know Liverpool win the league and United come second and our results look better. Or they both finish outside the top six and they look a lot worse.
Maybe GO’N used these games as free hits after banking the points to a) hope we pull off a big win by going for it which gives huge confidence for the season ahead or b) as a lesson to how quickly you can be punished at this level as a lesson for the season ahead.
The only real thing to worry about is that we have a point a game already, which keeps you up over a season usually, from 3 games against last seasons top 7. So at this stage, based on what we know, that looks decent.
Hull have also played potentially their easiest opponent of the season, a Villa team that seemingly can’t score and can’t win (1 shot on target in 270 minutes) so 4 points from 6 there is no real shock.
Start worrying about other teams and you’ll go insane. Our PPG is good. We’ve played well for large parts of each match. We’ve played some hard teams it appears and we’re several places above the drop.
That’s a bloody decent start. |

Whilst I agree with probably need to be a bit more defensively savvy, I'm guessing you didn't see the Aston Villa game. Villa missed probably 3 excellent chances. That wasn't Hull defending brilliantly, it was Villa missing absolute sitters.
Chelsea and Newcastle away and Everton at home. If they've still not let in goal in by then, or lost a game, then maybe come back then. |  | | |

Surprises me how many people are lapping up Hull so far. Playing 5-4-1 and letting the opposition dominate the ball is not a medium-long term plan for any sort of success. The owners are trying to grow a club here with an eye on really pushing on. We haven't signed players like Palacios and Enciso to bypass them. Appreciate we need to stay up this season but that can be achieved in many different ways. You have to be pragmatic at times but ultimately you want to be going toe to toe and trying to control the game and the ball. | | | |

An average of one point a game is a benchmark, if you can edge up over that, great, but don't fall below it. |  | | |
