Australian proposal to allow social media algorithms switch off - thoughts ? 11:46 - Sep 8 with 821 viewsWeWereZombies

'Communications Minister Anika Wells, who last year helmed the government's world-first social media ban for under-16s, said the digital duty of care laws would ensure "some basic safety protections on an industry that hasn't had to observe it".

If tech firms such as Meta, Google and TikTok did not give the option to turn off algorithms, they should face "substantial" penalties, she said..."We want to give Australians more choice over what they see on their social media feeds," Wells told the ABC on Monday.

"We know that a lot of Australians appreciate the algorithm both for the enjoyment they get out of it or the utility that they get out of it, seeing local businesses in their suburb..."Big tech is not a protected species and they should offer their customers basic safety standards."...Some members of the opposition have said they support the idea in principle, but others argue it is an attempt to curtail freedom of speech.'

Can't we just switch off social media?

Interestingly, I've read reports that MySpace might be looking to make a comeback, with an algorithm-free or at least algorithm-lite model for people looking for an antidote to the current formats. If regulation forces this option across the board anyway that might be non-starter.

Forums and message boards have existed for a long time. They have not had the impact on society that Twitter, Facebook, Tiktok and Instagram have had.

I utterly despise Facebook. Twitter has its uses but is largely a cesspit and it would be worth getting rid of the 10% good stuff to get rid of the 90%.

Although I agree with your second paragraph I do feel duty bound to ask whether your plans to invade Poland are on track...

Well that is how it works isn't it. It's not going to change now even if it was proven to be significantly harmful to mental health (which I believe it probably is for the majority of people).
