For the first time in decades, I walked past the Case Is Altered on Woodbridge Road on the night of the Liverpool game.
I think it was called that in those days but that was where I saw a friend of a friend perform. His act consisted of fairly experimental sound music coupled with his injecting a needle into his arm and squirting out his blood against a background screen.

Golden Key, Old Times, and like you I know the Lion/.Lion's Head but couldn't tell you the name (maybe both over the years - now the Harp) then as you say the Railway where I first met the current Mrs YBR (Lacey Street Blues Band were playing). | |

There were also the "alternative" stand ups and poets there in the very early 80s. Think we saw Alexei Sayle, John Cooper Clarke and others. Then local bands, Nagamatzu, Panorama in Black, Still Life in Action, Boredom Brothers, The Danserye, The Reasonable Strollers etc.

A bit further out, the Grundisburgh Dog has closed as well, looks like the manager who had the lease was running some very interesting financial arrangements, as it is has been historically a profitable establishment - probably much more difficult to make money in today's climate though.. |
Profitable or simply high turnover again ? They did well from selling food, I suspect most of that custom has switched to the Turks head now following various changes at the Dog over the years, even if the Turks head food is very expensive for the average pub visitor
I dont think the Dog is sustainable as just a wet led pub. | | | |

Probably because it was Greene King for most of its latter history. Was an Adnams pub in the 70s which was unusual as most pubs at that time in Ipswich were Tolly Cobbold or Greene King, Adnams only had 3 pubs in town iirc of which it was 1 | | | |

and in the Blue Coat boy case completely demolished to get rid of it, at least the Coach & Horses survived as a building shell, even if its passed unnoticed thesedays. |

I go in the Turks Head once a week, there is only ever a handful of people in there.
Weekends may be busier with food. It's a lovely little pub though.
and its not exactly a short walk from the GD, most of those will go in for 2/3/4 pints, so takes away the ability to drive there and back. I'd suggest the GD was purely used by Grunds folk | | | |

The three Adnams pubs in town that I recall are 'The Greyhound', 'The Golden Key' and that one in the 'V' between Bramford Road and Norwich Road ('The Crown' was it ?) There were no Greene King pubs in Ipswich in the early seventies but 'The Crown and Anchor' being a free house did start to sell their beer around 74/75, the first night that Abbot Ale was on tap was like The Somme, no one was ready for it and there were prone inert bodies everywhere.
The main rival to Tolly Cobbold was Ind Coope with 'The Oxborrows Hotel, 'The Ipswich Arms and, I think, 'The Brewers Arms' amongst others. And I think 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' was Watneys - which explained why hardly anyone went in it. There might have been a couple of Whitbread pubs too ('The Sorrel Horse' ?) but my memory is struggling a bit, must be the Abbot catching up with me. | |
