| We're awful at the back aren't we 17:34 - Sep 12 with 2295 views | SouperJim | Don't mean to be negative after a terrific away win, but 10 goals conceded in 4 games and looking all at sea for spells in all 4 games is really worrying. We've got some talented players and clearly carry plenty of threat, but unless we get a grip defensively and massively improve our game management, it's going to be a very long season. | |

| We're awful at the back aren't we on 18:53 - Sep 12 with 383 views | armchaircritic59 | It's the overall best and most toughest league any team can possibly compete in. Any mistakes are far more likely to be punished than anywhere else, by top and in some cases world class players. Yes, there are mistakes that will need ironing out, but we will concede that's for sure. As long as we keep up the scoring too, we should be ok. | | | |

| We're awful at the back aren't we on 18:45 - Sep 12 by SouperJim | It's going to be a very long season if we continue to leak 2.5 goals per game. I'd bet no team has ever stayed up conceding 95 goals. |
Breaking it down, we are 2-7 against L’pool and MU and 5-3 against teams that hopefully we can compete with. But it’s way too soon to judge anything yet and the ‘sample size’ is tiny. I don’t think the defence looks right at the moment - that’s obvious. However there are hopeful signs in that we look competitive against the lesser mortals, have some much better players than two years ago and actually offer a threat. Most teams will improve, as they always do. We might just do so too.

That's now two games we have won which we arguably would have folded in two years ago so progress has been made.

Man u second half was a horror show, but in the other 3 games our xg against is just under 2 for the 3 games combined. Whilst I think we need to be more compact at times, I don't think our defence has been as bad as you suggest. Oddly, our issue second half today was that we sat back too much and allowed them to get a foothold in the game, rather than that we were too open in general. We tried to manage a 2-1 lead rather than look to press home the advantage. From tge moment they equalised we took control again for the most part. Plenty to improve on, but way more to feel positive about.

You can argue just about anything with stats, but personally I think xg is largely a load of ballocks. How many times the ball ends up in the net is the stat that counts and we are leaking goals every game. With that said, I agree with your last line entirely. No reason to think we can't improve in that area and as I said in my OP, we certainly carry a threat.

I'm yet to be fully convinced by Sherpen, but you can't blame him for either goal today. The first one the deflection bent it away from him, second was an excellent finish. The 2 Liverpool goals definitely left a bit to be desired though.

Once that happened it was wide open. Defenders were all ok positioned. But their player had acres to run into, pointed exactly where he wanted it and shifted the ball quickly to stretch us rather than taking it on himself. That’s where having a more disrupting and screening influence in midfield would be good alongside Palacious or Lukic in my view Second goal a really good finish. Our goals all so well placed. The painful finishing of Ivan - always sending homing shots to the keeper / post / defenders arse seems a lifetime away.
