We're awful at the back aren't we 17:34 - Sep 12 with 2504 viewsSouperJim

Don't mean to be negative after a terrific away win, but 10 goals conceded in 4 games and looking all at sea for spells in all 4 games is really worrying. We've got some talented players and clearly carry plenty of threat, but unless we get a grip defensively and massively improve our game management, it's going to be a very long season.

We were better at the back today, Diop much more on it. The connection with the two defensive midfielders is a bit off at times still, but still improving connections.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Thrilled with the result but I think Kjell should have done better with both goals. The fist is a deflection but most other PL keepers would have saved it. Early days, I'd have settled for a point today, the sending off obviously helped, but it's not always easy playing against 10. Great win, keep the faith!

I’m not sure the balance is quite there yet rather than us being awfully defensively per se - we have continued to be brave in a man to man press and trying to squeeze the space and that leaves us exposed quite a lot. Before the red card Palace had a spare man over lots of times (including for their goal) and it seems to be the root of most of our problems.

The other side of the coin is of course that we look threatening going forward and have Leif back to his best and so it’s not a simple fix. Could make an argument for an extra body in midfield or defence against Liverpool or Man United but would we really have liked to match up a side like Palace? Difficult balancing act for the manager I think and based on results so far he’s got it right, but I expect there will be some bumps in the road along the way if we continue to have a go like we have.

Diop has been excellent and we're extremely lucky to have him, I'm not sure we'd have a point yet without him.

The gaps we leave for the opposition to exploit at times is absolutely criminal, we were awful for it at United and the same again today. Watched both games on TV so it's difficult to know where the fault lies without being able to see the whole pitch.

We’ve spent nearly 200m but 3 out of the back 4 played last time we were in the premier league

And we all know how that went

O’Shea needs to be moved back in the middle, that’s a reality we need to face.

Don't matter when you win 3-2.

If they score 8 and we score 9, bring it on.

We've scored 2 or more goals in 3 of our 4 games.
Kevin Keegan (bless him) is luvvin' it 'cos we're trying to outscore the opposition.

We don't seem to have a very consistent line. It's hard not to think it'd be much more organized with O'Shea alongside Diop, but he's obviously seen as useful to have in that right back slot, which you can understand - he made some important defensive contributions today.

You do wonder if we're just getting Ouattara up to speed and eventually he'll take over.

To be fair it is the nature of this league, trying to get three points now inevitably leaves you vulnerable, so many games like this, especially in the later stages of games.

Some fair points, but saying its going to be a very long season after 2 wins from 4, having scored 7 goals, is a weird conclusion.

I've been critical of him this season but that seems harsh to me, it's right in the corner. The one big mistake he did make was pushing the ball out to Khalaili who really should have scored to make it 3-2, but luckily we got away with it!

‘Don’t mean to be negative’

Is that the same softening approach as ‘I don’t mean to be rude but’ - then being as rude as hell?

I think he needs to try Ouattara at right back and put Dara back in the middle.

Yep, watching games on tv as I do, is a double edged sword. You tend to see the area of the pitch where the play is concentrated at a given time, but can't see a wider viewpoint. On the other hand, what you do see, you tend to see a lot better than those in quite a lot of the stadium. Six of one, half dozen of the other!

We are a little shaky parts of the games, and hopefully we can grow into it as the season progresses. We are newcomers in the PL after all and have 14 new players to bed in. What annoyes me is that our passing is quite sloppy in parts and it puts us under unnecissary pressure. In the winther window i would like us to shift Taylor and Kipre and buy a solid left sided CB and a defensively strong left back (to see games out and for when we meet the top six).

While I agree that we are so far below average defensively (I'm being kind) and too open in midfield. We've still had a great start. I see it as a positive in that it is something that should be easy to improve on, and if we do, we will be safe. I would be much more worried if we just weren't good enough, like the last time we were in this league.

Thought Diop was absolutely class and Greaves looked a lot more comfortable. We look open but at the same time if we score like we have so far the we’ll be fine.

You have 2 options from what I can see in the Prem.

1, basically stick 10 behind the ball and try and hit on the counter attack. Hull have adopted that approach and its working brilliantly for them. Interesting the experts often reference that as Champ/L1 style and when you have world class players like you have in the Prem they will easily break that - Hull are proving they can make it work. We also saw in the World Cup how difficult it is to break that down. However thats ok if it continues working, if it doesn't do you have the players to operate a plan B.

2, play a more attacking style, like other PL teams. Scoring goals is important, but attack can leave you open. I keep hearing people moan Leif isn't a defender, but without Leif's attacking ability we don't win that game today. This style does require the team defending as a team when required. When Leif bombs forward a midfielder needs to drop into his position, like Kante did at Leicester & Chelsea and thats not happening at the moment.
The gap between our CHs and midfield is also often too wide, that's resulting in the CHs going backwards, that needs resolving. Interesting Fulham manager on BBC London when asked about their defending improving after not conceding today he made the point its not the defence improving its the midfield and forwards whose defending has improved resulting in a clean sheet

Personally I prefer option 2, but I think it will take time for all the new players to fully integrate into the model GON is aiming for.

The real positive is we have 6 points from 4 games all while we're trying to adapt.

It's going to be a very long season if we continue to leak 2.5 goals per game. I'd bet no team has ever stayed up conceding 95 goals.

Palace have just scored 3 against Fulham away and Boro at home on 18:48 - Sep 12 with 990 viewsunstableblue

No one is suggesting our defence was good enough

I need to watch the full game replay to form an opinion.

But Palace have threat.

And positively GON has also admitted that he wasn’t happy with our solidity today. And it’s an area for improvement.

Yes, very impressive post match I thought.

Referenced the Liverpool game and still being a bit too open in this game.

Wasn't my first choice but i'm really warming to him. I thought after McKennas honest interviews we may have to get used to all the cliches again but he is also very good at media.
