Exactly this. He is very attacking. Defending has never been his best attribute and when we had luongo he was brilliant at covering Lief's forays up the pitch. We've never really replaced that and it leaves people blaming Davis for things others should be helping with. | | | |

I haven't really analysed Palace's goals to any extent, but certainly in an attacking sense that was one of the most impressive games Leif has put in for Town, especially if you take into account the quality of the opposition.
He has developed to a point where he is being as effective in the Premier League as he had been in the Champ prior to our first PL promotion. He was a bit disappointing in that first PL season, in that his defensive abilities were brutally exposed, and yet he didn't really contribute as frequently as we'd hoped in an attacking sense.
It may be the quality of those around him, the instructions from the manager, his own development and experience, or most likely a combination of all three.
I certainly recall being frustrated (in a sort of vaguely educated amateur way) by the instructions to tuck in that he seemed to have been given by KMac, in a way that made me think "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
Even at his best, he's never previously been a scorer of goals. He's not Gareth Bale, and it would be rather unreasonable to expect him to be. But goodness me, he's got 2 goals from 4 league starts, the same as Emersonn, who's clearly been really impressive in a goalscoring position.
And it's mad that he's not credited with an assist for the Flemming goal! In NHL ice hockey, which has had the formal "assist" concept for a long long time, you'd get an assist in these circumstances, even if you weren't trying to assist, but were trying to score yourself.
As regards the defensive impact of his forays, I suppose playing Dara at right back allows us to shift to 3 at the back. But... if we need to worry about the defensive impact, it's because he's high up the pitch and we lose the ball. In which case, our difficulty is that the other team will come at us with speed, and having three centre backs as our only defenders hardly gives us the best chance of being able to reorganise at pace.
Anyway, right now it's working. We're winning the tight games which are 'winnable' on paper, and by Jesus we have to do that to stay up. Leif is majorly contributing in an attacking sense. What I haven't yet thought about is what that might tell us about how our left wingers are performing. Is the industrious Maeda allowing and facilitating Leif's forays? Well, he wasn't on the pitch until after the hour mark yesterday, so maybe I need to give this more thought, or just give Leif maximum credit and be done with it. |  | | |

In context yes but defensively I still think he can do better for the first goal. It's not his fault because the issue actually came from the midfield not tracking Kamada but you'd still like him to block it.
Certainly the best player for the first 4 games and already exceeded his goal tally from 24/25.

Let's not forget that in a poor team, Leif ended up ninth in 2024-25 in terms of chances created in the Premier League, ahead of any other defender.

And Leif then, as now, was expected to get forward, so it is not surprising that he is not always in the best of positions when it comes to defending.

I assume this is the logic of having O'Shea at right back. So that (in theory) when Davis is forward we do indeed have three centre backs during those moments. Whether it actually feels like it's working like that is another matter perhaps. |  | | |
