Gary O'Neil's tactical adaptability 09:00 - Sep 16 with 605 viewsBlueMoon

Is this a thing?

Don't get me wrong, I think he's done well so far. Only thing I will say is the aspect he talked up when signing was his ability to be adaptable; pick the right formation and players for the game at hand.

I have less of an issue last night with it being against a good team in the cup but it did get me thinking about the 2nd half at Man U, the 1st half at home to Liverpool where we lost the game, conceding freely in rapid succession. I don't see GON responding and limiting damage at these times. Once a couple go in you're staring down the barrel of a potentially embarrassing defeat. Last night we go out of the cup as expected but, in the league, we don't do goal difference (or morale) any good.

Think we have to pick our battles more; more defensive against the top sides and then go for it in the games we feel we stand a chance.

The Liverpool goals happened so early and so quickly, there was no chance to respond - but we did, without making wholesale changes, prevent them from scoring for the remaining 80+ minutes, while not being unthreatening ourselves.

At ManU we were forced into a change at HT, losing some of our forward hold-up play. Then O'Neil started making changes as soon as the handball and penalty incidents happened. The Mbuemo goal was a bit of a freak (similarly Nunez v Leicester).

In any case, I believe that both those matches were somewhat experimental, testing the team against the toughest opposition to see what still needs working on and how formations are best tweaked against the better sides.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I've mentioned it previously.

Personally I think O'Neil is purposley not tweaking with the set up for now. We're a new side, some players joined late, some had injuries etc. We have had a mix of games against mid sides to top sides. In my view, he's been very specific about playing the way he wants us to play in games against imo those outside the top6 clubs. I feel he's really keen on drilling in the requirements of plan A and the sooner the squad as a whole are comfortable with that, we will then begin to see plan B later in the season.

Why I feel this?

In pre season, we played Le Havre, they played with a back 5 I believe and after Gary said we hadn't even trained to go up against it. That for me was a sign that we're well drilled in training towards what he wants us to do over what opponents could do to us.

He'll know how to sit deep and how to counter. But if we did that V utd and liverpool... then played Palace - would we be as progressive as we were?

V Sunderland and Palace that's 5 goals. That goal scoring whilst tweaking the defensive mistakes, will keep us up.

So concentrate on Plan A lets master that so we are well prepared for the season as a whole, the defensive plan B can come later.

I think he is making tactical changes through substitutions - you don't have to change formation to change tactics, bringing on a different type of player in the same position can have an effect as well.

In all the games we have lost, we have responded on the pitch and maybe as a result GON has not felt the need to further juggle with formation itself. We have finished strongly in all games, without having to make wholesale changes. We have now scored the final goal in 5 from 6 matches, usually in the closing minutes, suggests we finish strongly. People will argue that opposition may have taken their foot off the gas, which may be true - but we still have to push and attack for that goal.

He made the player changes against Sunderland which lead to the goal, likewise against Palace, substitute scores the winner. Last night he brought on Clarke and Davis, and immediately saw us pull the first goal back via Clarke's conrtibution, and then later in the game Lukic who made some vital interceptions in front of the defence towards the end of the game.

The one thing I do want to see is more clean sheets, but we have been the architect of our own downfall for a number of goals - I think the clean sheets will come as the midfield settles into a better rhythm and gets used to each other and the defence behind it.

Yeah, guess so. Funny, I see downvotes as more where I think something is outright ridiculous or trolling so don’t really use them.

I very rarely use them for the same reason. Can’t see the point tbh, but each to their own.

To the OP, my view is that the United collapse and Liverpool ambush happened too fast. What could he do at that point? Not much really. What’s more important is that other teams will see that and try and repeat it, so what’s O’Neil going to do about it?

We need to start better. How? No idea, but it’s still very early days. If this still happening in November I’ll start to be concerned. At the moment everyone is still learning who each other are etc etc. I think patience, as always, is the key.
