| Looks like the Zionism is Racism motion has passed on 21:57 - Oct 5 by DJR | The Green Party of England and Wales is out of step with the rest of the European Greens. https://europeangreens.eu/news The EGP has always supported a two-state solution, with self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians, grounded in recognition of Israel’s and Palestine’s equal right to exist as sovereign states, with the recognition of the State of Palestine as an important step towards achieving this solution. As part of the European Greens, the Green Party of England and Wales has contributed to forming the position, including the two-state solution, throughout the years. Yesterday, the Conference of the Green Party of England and Wales voted on a resolution called “Zionism is Racism.” The European Green Party leadership and several of our Member Parties have been in contact with the GPEW leadership beforehand in order to express our deep concern about it. The resolution “Zionism is Racism” as voted yesterday goes against our agreed positions of the EGP and its Member Parties, therefore as EGP we unequivocally distance ourselves from it. We condemn in the strongest terms the genocide against Palestinians and the human rights abuses committed by the current Israeli government and have consistently called for EU sanctions against Israel’s government. Equally, the fight against antisemitism and for human rights is an essential part of our political agenda. At a time when antisemitic incidents and violent attacks are surging, it is of utmost importance to be absolutely unambiguous on this: Jewish people must be able to live free from discrimination and violence. We have seen that many members of GPEW, including most of the MPs, have publicly spoken against the resolution and its content, shared posts, videos and personal declarations expressing their concerns. At the Conference, less than 1 per cent of the membership voted. Therefore, as EGP we will immediately demand clarity from the leadership and parliamentary group of GPEW, to understand the official party policy of GPEW, how they position themselves towards the self-determination of Israeli and Jews as well as the protection of Jewish people and members in the party. |
Having heard a few interviews and sound bites from the conference and various people defending it or trying to explain it, it’s really clear it’s a mess. They go from the newly zealous (and a literal Muslim) convert on the one hand, to a sort of cackhanded “jewsplaining” on the other as to what the Israelis and palesstinians should want. All in a very ironic colonial sounding paternal manner. I just don’t get how this isn’t as big a own goal as Polanski attacking the police on Twitter and doubling down it over Golders Green (I think)

"We have seen that many members of GPEW, including most of the MPs, have publicly spoken against the resolution and its content," Think Polanski will need to resign before the GPEW can start to recover from this. The latest weighing in against them for the passing of the resolution was John McDonnell MP on Peston last night, & of course Robert Peston himself, very vociferous & passionate in his condemnation over the past 2 days. Yes, it's sad for many ordinary members. I looked at the local Green Party website, and all of the news articles in the last few months had some sort of connection to the environment, including things like organised litter pick-ups. [Post edited 6 Oct 7:19]

To me this is far worse than that Polanski issue. That was just one individual being crass or insensitive. This is a motion passed by the party which will become official policy. It isn't though making right wing newspaper headlines because they are more interested in bigging up the Tories.
