| Train back from Manchester 11:06 - Oct 18 with 2775 views | DJR | Anyone else suffer the exceptionally slow train back to London after the game? The journey took about 3.75 hours, and meant that I didn't get back to Kent until after midnight, the latest ever for a 3pm away game. [Post edited 18 Oct 11:10]

| Train back from Manchester on 11:30 - Oct 18 with 2490 views | Rozz | Not sure if I was on the same one, but it ran late and missed my connection which I then learned was the last direct train to Stevenage of the day. About 5.5hrs in total back to Herts, including an hour wait at Donny and a detour via Peterborough. Not much to do around Doncaster station after 9pm! | | | |
| Train back from Manchester on 13:04 - Oct 18 with 2274 views | Steve_M | Yep, and we were delayed on both journeys too. On the plus side at least it was one train rather than a bus part of the way and we stocked up properly for the return trip. A good day but being out of Euston for more than 12 hours plus getting across London means I’m quite tired today. | |

I did pay full fare and went Avanti from Euston to Manchester. The issue was that the train on both journeys was diverted via Birmingham due to engineering work and was forced to go slow on that part of the journey. Adding to the time was getting stuck behind slower trains on both journeys. In addition, my journey back from London to Kent took far longer than usual, meaning 17 hours from leaving the station at 07.08 and getting back there just after midnight. Of course, I never mind the journey there but it's the journey back that is the pain, and yesterday's was a real killer especially being on my tod. [Post edited 18 Oct 13:52]

| Train back from Manchester on 15:28 - Oct 18 with 1942 views | John_Warks_Willy | I regularly get trains down to London and up to Manchester from Midlands, and more often than not there is now an issue of some sort on any given journey, and sometimes just insane situations like the one you described. #brokenbritain 😊 | |

| Train back from Manchester on 15:44 - Oct 18 with 1894 views | Matt_Netherlands | The train to / from Donny (to Piccadilly) was shocking. Stood both ways for an hour and a half a pop. Can understand why northerners bang on about a north / south divide when it comes to infrastructure. Doncaster station around 8pm was a delight. Remind me to never go there again. | | | |

The same is true of the Euston to Liverpool line which my wife and I use quite a lot to visit her family. More often than not there are delays, often severe, but purchasing a ticket which involves both Southeastern and Avanti makes it very difficult to successfully claim delay repay. An extreme example was when my wife was delayed something like five hours coming back. She put in a claim but heard nothing for weeks, only to eventually get a response which turned her down. At that stage she decided to give up, and I will not bother making a claim for yesterday's trip to Manchester even though it was pointed out on the train that it was available because of the delay. Indeed, the impression I get is that delay repay only works properly if the journey involves only one operator because there is too much buck-passing.. [Post edited 18 Oct 19:56]

Nothing changed there then. Slept on a bench there in 1990s after a 5.1 midweek drubbing at Barnsley - stupidly thought there’d be trains all night to London | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The regular weekend engineering works are an absolute pain, but when else can they do them?

| Train back from Manchester on 07:45 - Oct 19 with 1100 views | Bluebell | We caught the Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly at Oxford. The train was 20 minutes late as somebody had been ‘taken ill’ at Basinstoke. We had a numbered seat fortunately so people who were sitting in our seats did move for us, fortunately. At most stations it had to stop it as couldn’t get into the station and then took far too long going as crowds got on. There were people all along the aisles so no food or drink trolleys and no chance of getting to the toilets. We eventually arrived at Manchester 45 minutes late having been on the train for 3 and a half hours. The train back was just as full and fortunately started at Manchester so we got seats. That one was over half an hour late so we got back to Oxford at 10 o’clock. All for 90 minutes (+ extra time) of football! | | | |

That is true, and to be fair, I've rarely been affected on my travels to away games. It's Greater Anglia that has been a far greater issue, but less so last season or this.

The Draughtsman closes at 8pm. The Railway next to the station closes at 9pm. Looking at maps now, I could've walked a little further on to the Leopard, but I'd had enough by then and opted to find food inside the station. Also closed. As was the Sainsbury's opposite. Sat in the luggage rack to Peterborough. Not my best journey home. Did meet a couple of nice Wimbledon fans who were similarly delayed except they were spanked 5-0. It could always be worse!

I normally stop off in Donny for a pint if I am going to Newcastle for work, very nice pub shame it shuts so early.

Did you discuss with the Wimbledon fans how useless Joe Pigott was? He joined us after a purple patch at Wimbledon & subsequently scored 10 times in 121 League games. Prolific in the Isthmian League for Folkestone, though.

The Draughtsman closes earlier on a Saturday though. 7pm from memory, but the guy who runs the place told me they sometimes close earlier if too many football fans come through. Not worth the aggro he said.

Pigott completely escaped my memory if I'm honest! They both held extremely high regard for Ali Al Hamadi. The best finisher they had seen at the club in modern times, apparently.

Al Hamadi can't get a start in league one so dread to think how poor Wimbledon are currently for them to think he was their best striker.
