| The Threshold 14:24 - Oct 21 with 480 views | The_Flashing_Smile | What is this mystical "threshold for a penalty"? I'd have thought if you made contact with a player (and not the ball) from behind, who was moving at pace, then even the slightest of contact would be enough to topple them, and therefore a pen? Seems very arbitrary this threshold thing. | |

| The Threshold on 14:32 - Oct 21 with 442 views | ITFC_Essex | It used to be a deliberate foul in the box, which prevented the player from scoring what was a 99% certainty of a goal (always a chance even with an open goal they will miss or clip the post), or being able to create an opportunity that could have led to a goal, had the player not been fouled in the box. Then the Premier League happened, and the diving came, then the drama around rules became good TV, which has since evolved into great swipe content for the phone drones, and thus we're stuck with nonsense made up shte like "Threshold for a Penalty". It's now just rules to make good content the influencers and journalists can pontificate over, rather than a sporting decision. Because we need to know what TalkSport thinks. It's no longer really a secret that the shirt a player wears influences a ref's decision-making process, so now even that can be brushed away as subjective "threshold". On a slightly different topic, I'm looking forward to the moment when the same player one week "earns the right" to go down in the hope of getting a penalty, "earns the right" to be carded for diving the following week. | |

I think an independent panel should review any suspected dives, and any player found to have dived should be fined and get a 5 match ban. You needn't overturn the result of the game, but if you did this, it would vanish overnight because top clubs won't want to be without key players for five games.

| The Threshold on 15:49 - Oct 21 with 227 views | Blueschev | Isn't the VAR team supposed to be the "Key Incidents Panel"? How much more over analysis is needed? VAR was supposed to eliminate the need for such things. It's almost as though it's pointless and the ref should be allowed to officiate the game. [Post edited 21 Oct 15:51]

Indeed. The result stands whatever happens, so I really don't know what the point of this panel is.

Yep. Most of the rules/decisions in football are subjective. Technology should have stopped at goal line/offside decisions.

Diving has always happened in football. For someone who supposedly dislikes drama your post is certainly high in it.

I can think of two purposes for the panel. 1. Critical mass. By investing more resources in anything, you grow its importance until you reach the "too big to fail / to big to get rid of" threshold. VAR will be with us forever, it's now becoming too important: losing it will cost too many jobs. 2. Indignation "assuagement" Learning that an independent panel voted that Harry Maguire's handball skills should not have resulted in a goal helps us deal with the indignation and the injustice of the referee's decision. It doesn't fix the mistake, but it offers us all a little moral superiority which serves as mild pain relief. It also allows VAR to claim collectively "ultimately we get the decision right, even if we don't get it right on the day." There's plenty of psychology involved, obviously.
