Left of a back 3 sounds like a terrible idea for a player who's best attributes were attacking.

Whilst his sublime crossing was his greatest asset, he actually was a top defender as well and from a 3 back has license to occasionally get in crossing positions.
Mings on the other hand was a poor defender but brilliant going forward which made his move to centre back more surprising imo. |  | | |
