Sorry, didn’t want to be quite so bullish but a half volley is when the ball is struck at the exact moment it touches the ground. Doesn’t matter, though, let’s agree it was a joy to watch for its creativity and execution. Would be good to see more of the same at Portman Road next season.

I think he's right. That's how i've always thought of it. half-volley noun (chiefly in tennis or soccer) a strike or kick of the ball made immediately after it bounces off the ground.

Charlton 0 - 1 Shrewsbury on 22:16 - May 10 by Steve_M | Yeah, that's a half-volley to me too. |
A fantastic goal without a doubt but that is not a half volley, in my opinion. A half volley is when you smack it as it lands. I take the point made earlier about headers and volleys rules but that goal is a volley, as I say great strike regardless. Nolan looked a decent player on that performance, I know nothing about him as the sound was off for that game in my local as unsurprisingly there were more West Ham and Man Utd fans in.

Nah, as has been pointed out a half volley is when you catch it right on the bounce.

Nope. It's the only correct view. You have half volleys in tennis and cricket too and it's not a term used to describe any shot where the ball has bounced. I've genuinely never heard anyone describe a shot where the ball is in the air as a half volley before. Must be a weird Suffolk thing.

Nothing to do with Suffolk. Me and the BBC reporter obviously misunderstood the bounce part of a half volley. 😊

Heard it and it's always annoyed me. A volley is in the air, a half volley is obviously as it bounces.

Nonsense sir. A half volley is hitting the ball after it has bounces once. Maybe it depends on where you are in the country.

How I know this - I researched it years ago at length after a disagreement in the pub, A half volley in football is striking a ball after it bounces up but before it reaches the point where it starts to drop down again. So as long as it has bounced once and the ball is in an upwards trajectory it is described as a half volley, but the second the ball starts to drop it is technically no longer a half volley.
