It's interesting and actually fairly optimistic about the worst efforts of those - on either side of the political spectrum - to create one here.

I'll read it shortly but a lot of people on here and elsewhere seem to think we are culturally very similar to the US when in fact, we are very far apart, and so due to this misunderstanding they think whatever the US has or suffers is surely destined for here too when it usually isnt t. Having a proper Labour party over the past couple of decades would have helped massively. Replacing values with branding has created an ever-more normalised, fairly right-wing view where nothing in this country can or should be done about structural problems. We've become totally apathetic as a result and a vacuum that dodgy populism can march gaily into. |  |

You don't need a culture war to have two parties with differing ideologies. Truth is, centrism now essentially means neoliberalism, which is why so many of the recent Labour party policies have been deemed 'far left' when they're nothing of the sort.Especially given Johnson has indulged in several of them already! |  |

The idea of a cultural war is stupid in this day and age. Let's have a reality war.
On one side we can have people pushing for what is needed to serve the needs of the country and all its citizens - and what works based on actual facts and real understanding.
On the other side there can be the people who want to deny everything and push what they believe or want to believe is true about society and the world. From the economy, healthcare, foreign policy, education, the environment etc. Often for their own self-interest and from their own narrow and shallow perspective.
The Battle of Brexit was just the start. A battle we lost but perhaps we can still win the war.
Edit: Oh and "massive change"!!?? No, it's just taking care of the stuff we all say we want to take care of. Maybe a change in mindset but there's no massive differences between the UK and more progressive societies apart from a brighter reality for those who need support and a brighter future in general. Those of us lucky enough to not need much support would see very little change and certainly wouldn't have to give up much at all. We'd all probably be happier though. [Post edited 5 Feb 2020 11:28]
