3-4-2-1 feeling tomorrow... 08:37 - Feb 28 with 1314 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

I have a feeling we might go 3-4-2-1 tomorrow, looking like this:

------Holy-------
----Woolf----Chambers----Earl----
Edwards--Downes--Huws--Garbutt
-----Judge---------Bishop-----
--------Keane--------

Judge and Bishop effectively as two number 10's with license to pick up positions where they want. Would need Edwards and Garbutt to play a bit higher than what they currently do to provide effective width.

Freddie off the bench for Bishop. Freddie to then start Tuesday instead of Bishop.

*EDIT* - I give up on making the line up look neat on the eye

Although I am and probably never will be a massive admirer of a 3 at the back, as I don't think Lambert has that tactical knowledge to implement it properly.

Having said that, right now it is seemingly the way we are playing.

Dobra for Judge for me but that isn't going to happen.

At least eight players in that line-up who are good at playing the ball, but will not play it into any area that brings a goal.

You need KVY to play 4 at the back - Edwards is fine as a wing back, but you're taking a chance as a RB in a back 4.

I think with the current crop of players fit and available, I don't think 4 at the back is an option and I don't think 2 up top is an option either with Keane and Sears being the only two fit. Sears isn't 90 minutes fit either we have to remember - Tuesday has to be in mind too.

That's a fair point you make. I've never thought of it like that, but you're spot on.A few can, but don't do it enough is the argument I'd make.

I don't know what the stats would be, but a high number of the goals we've conceded lately have been as a result of the opposition coming in round the back of Chambo, drifting in between him and Edwards. Edwards doesn't see the danger and Chambo and him for some reason aren't dealing with that threat.

For all his sins, I'd use Donacien as right back and go to a flat back four. It's free up people like Edwards, Dobra, Sears to do what they're best at. The only player I'd be comfortable playing in not their ideal spot would be Garbutt. He adds a lot going forward but he's more than good enough to play as a left back (and if we played two holding midfielders, there'd still be cover to allow him to maroud forward. Sears is clever enough to potentially make a Garbutt/Sears partnership on the left work very well.

I think you'll probably be right with that, although maybe Nolan for Huws.

I'd go

Donacien-----Woolf------Chambers---Garbutt
-----------------Downes----Dozzell--------------
------------------------Bishop----------------------
-------Sears----------Keane------------Judge----

From what Lambert has said I reckon Teddy and Freddie will both start.

Personally don't like the look of that. Donacien, Dozzell, Bishop and Sears won't be anywhere near it with match sharpness. Judge on the left from the start is something I'd hope we don't see again this season. I don't mind a mid game change of tactic to put him out there for a change of formation etc.

I'd be surprised to see them both start together, but they must be chomping at the bit for a first league start. Big opportunities for the pair of them over the next 3 games.

I think it'll be the same as last week, but with Jackson for Sears. The other two changes on the table are probably Huws for Nolan, Bishop for Judge.

I think the last 2 games have really exposed Edwards at RWB, so I'd be inclined to recall Donacien and at least defend properly.
