Was anybody else in the frame for the job before he got it? Either interviewed or strongly rumoured.

Nigel Pearson was the other leading contender, he later said he was disappointed not to get the nod.

Pearson Disappointed Not to Get Town Job 10th Apr 2012 09:28
Leicester manager Nigel Pearson has admitted he was disappointed not to be named Blues boss when he was interviewed for the role after Joe Royle’s departure in May 2006. Pearson, who was the assistant manager at West Brom at the time, was interviewed by then-Town chairman David Sheepshanks and chief executive Derek Bowden but lost out to retiring Blues skipper Jim Magilton. 22

Looking back at an old story, Colin Calderwood, Ian Holloway and Joe Royle's assistant manager Willie Donachie were also in the running at one stage.

Yes, looking around he went from there to Forest in May 2006, so must have been an early target.

Pearson would have been an excellent appointment.

Really wanted Jim to work out but it was underwhelming. Heart would like him back but i'm not sure he would improve on Lambert in all honesty (i know people will slam that down but i think its reality).

Poll: Genuine answers please on what you would choose next season!

It was Pearson's job to lose at the interview stage - Sheepshanks was a big fan - but he gave a poor interview, while the opposite was the case for Jim.

It was very quiet to be honest. But a lovely day nonetheless.
