Locusts, just to make a change from Covid-19 threads... 08:24 - May 6 with 969 viewsWeWereZombies

Interesting piece on the BBC website that seems to be given a higher profile after being in the background all week:

Not at all cheerful but perhaps now is a good time to think about how adverse natural phenomena spread and how humans respond.

Good article.

This has been ongoing for a few months now, I remember a podcast on it from back then. China were sending a huge number of ducks to Pakistan at the time (at least that's my recollection) in order to try and tackle the locusts.

That’s really interesting and the stuff of movies. I remember at school in the last century the mad people that did biology had a dirty great tank of them. Disgusting creatures.

I know a few biologists. They can be a strange bunch, but disgusting creatures is going a bit far.

They used to pick up roadkill and boil off the flesh to reveal the skeletons, a rat tank with loads of live ones - they had some arrangement with a local lab of some sort, frogs, mice, all sorts. It was a subject I ducked out of as soon as I could.

At primary school we had a big glass case of live locusts got a while. There must have been 200 of them in it. All they did all day was sit on top of each other. I can see why they breed and spread so quickly as it was a giant orgy all day, every day.

I've not idea what became of them. They just disappeared one day.

Interestingly, Las Vegas had.... on 14:43 - May 6 with 846 viewsBloots

….a plague of them last year and it's relatively common there.

It happens when they get heavy rainfall apparently.
