Day five of the cricket - Opinions? 10:01 - Aug 25 with 2831 views | JackPITFC | What is everyone's thoughts? will the weather mean a draw is inevitable? Or will England skittle Pakistan, Jimmy to get 600 Wickets would be a fantastic achievement today. Azhar Ali seem's like the one to get at the minute, hopefully we can see Bess make a real impact but has flattered to deceive at times. Also whats everyone's best team from start to finish after this summer's tests.

Day five of the cricket - Opinions? on 10:03 - Aug 25 with 2803 views | Steve_M | Draw is very likely, very wet overnight so will take a while for the outfield to dry and there is more rain forecast to about lunchtime. Ideally England needed to have been a bit better on Sunday but not sure they did a lot wrong yesterday (Butler drop aside). Should get most of the afternoon though so still a chance especially if two or three wickets go down early.

Day five of the cricket - Opinions? on 10:08 - Aug 25 with 2784 views | gainsboroughblue | Just checked weather outlook for Southampton and it doesn't look as bad as I thought it was going to be. That said, still plenty of risk of rain and there hasn't been much luck at the tests this summer at avoiding it. I'm edging towards a draw but the question mark is whether we would take the catches that come our way in any case. Jimmy should be on 603 wickets already. Best team: Sibley, Burns, Crawley, Root, Stokes, Pope, Buttler, Woakes, Archer, Broad, Anderson. (Root is in as my spinner but obviously that wouldn't fly in the sub-continent)

Day five of the cricket - Opinions? on 10:08 - Aug 25 with 2782 views | clive_baker | Draw I would think, which is a shame given our 1st innings. Weather has played its part but also fair play to Pakistan, they're stubborn and thus far have dug in well. Would love to see Jimmy get 3 wickets today.

The Pitch is just so slow, England batted superbly in the first innings, like you say yesterday England needed to be a bit better, but like a lot of times having Ben Stokes in the side yesterday could've made the real difference for the team, picking up a wicket out of nowhere like he usually does. Been a positive Summer though, with Buttler back to form and the emergence of Crawley, Pope and Stokes carrying on his excellent form before being called home. Fair play to the ECB can't knock them and of course to West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland ODI team for staying in a Bio Secure bubble to ensure Cricket is possible.

I totally agree with that team, the real question in the sub-continent which Spinner would you play because nobody really has made that position their own, there has been talk of Adil Rashid coming back to red ball? Ideally i'd maybe go back to Jack Leach as he was fairly decent in the Ashes last year. although the only way Bess will get more consistent is through playing games. [Post edited 25 Aug 2020 10:15]

Day five of the cricket - Opinions? on 10:44 - Aug 25 with 2715 views | solemio | It's Day 4 of the important cricket, Somerset v Glos. Still it's nice to see mention of so many Somerset cricketers; Azhar, Dom and Jack. Babar also learned all he knows about cricket at Taunton. I don't think there have ever been two more popular overseas players among the Somerset faithful than these two. Such nice genuine guys, and clearly equally popular among their playing colleagues. I haven't been on this site for a few days so don't know whether this has been commented on, but it was great to see the sportsmanship of virtually every member of the Pakistan team congratulating Crawley when he was finally out. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It would be an incredible injustice if there was no play at Taunton today!

Bit worried for Somerset - surely could be left two wickets short of a win again with this weather. They've dominated every match this season really and ought to be in the final, but can see it going wrong somehow... EDIT: although, the forecast in Taunton is good for the rest of the day! 19 Tests & 36 wickets at nearly 40 a go says Adil Rashid isn't a good enough Test bowler. He's had shoulder problems & at 32 he isn't going to get better. England are likely to be denied the win they deserve by the weather, but they've won the series. I will feel sympathy for Jimmy Anderson if he's left high & dry on 599 wickets. Who knows when he will next play in a Test?

To be fair, it's 60 wickets, and he probably hasn't always been captained that well, but agree with the general point. I'd have thought that an extended run for Jack Leach would be the best option.

Sadly I fear you are probably right, although I'm sure we'd both like you to be wrong! Depends how dry they have managed to keep the outfield, which is usually the problem at Taunton. I see both Overtons, Jove and Cove, and Brooksyferret were out helping to get the outfield covers on as soon as play was abandoned for the day yesterday.

Sorry yes - 60 wickets at 40 a pop. Still not good enough. Agree Leach is probably the best spin option & Somerset clearly rate him higher than Bess. Cowardly if England prefer Bess on the grounds he will score a few more runs. Bess strikes me as another old fashioned English "bits & pieces" player.

Day five of the cricket - Opinions? on 11:03 - Aug 25 with 2678 views | Nthsuffolkblue | We need to get the 8 wickets without them getting enough to make us bat again because I am expecting enough time for that but not for us to bat again. Likely to be a close thing but I reckon we will sneak an innings-and win just in time, that or a draw with Pakistan taking as long as possible and passing our score. Could be interesting if we actually get a few overs to score 20-30 runs. Anderson should get his 600th today. Will get some overs early and even if he doesn't get it in his first spell should get a second spell unless they collapse to the other bowlers.

Day five of the cricket - Opinions? on 11:26 - Aug 25 with 2647 views | hampstead_blue | Long bath. It's hacking it down in Wilts and was all night. Bat away, feet up, pour the radox in the bath and grab a mug of tea. However, in other news, Essex are top of the table and heading for another day at Lords.

Like the look of that side Gainsboroughblue, can't see how I can shoehorn Sam Curran in? He never lets England down when he plays, but none of those bowlers deserve to be given the elbow. However, when we play in the subcontinent, I'd drop Woakes and one of Anderson and Broad (for rest really, as it's such a slog on those pitches and rotate) and look to draft in a couple of spinners from: Bess, Leach or the Surrey lad Amar Virdi. Not any more were top of our league but now 3rd overall behind Somerset and Derbyshire, have to win against Middlesex and get maximum bonus points as well. We missed a bonus point by 1 run today that might hurt us.

I didn't realise it the two sides that win their group with the best points tally that make the final at Lords. That's certainly put Essex at a slight disadvantage going into the last round of games.
