Discovered yesterday that according to the Equality Act 2010, I may class myself as disabled, thus able to participate in guaranteed interview schemes for civil service jobs.

Pity I can't backdate this to previously submitted applications as I have one on the go I'd really like... Hey ho.

Absolutely stunned when I was told this and googled it to confirm it.

Downside is that it looks like I'm gonna take a £15-20k a year hit on earnings as most jobs that pay what I used to earn seem to require a degree... Bit tough on someone who left school at 15, but has subsequently earned both vocational and professional qualifications which don't mean a damn outside of those industries or are now out of date within the industry, so any positive angle is to be exploited.

Feels strange that this time last year my colleague and i were putting together plans for the Trump visit, to supply over 1,200 services to the US Embassy over a three week period, this includes being part of the motorcades, some challenging long days with some services lasting the full three weeks, having to explain to bookers that they can't have their favourite driver because he's working for a more important client.

Finally, don't feel sorry for me (as If you would!) I have a conditional job offer due to commence April 2021.... So technically I do have a job to go to, it's just I'd like one with earnings nearer to that on my last p60 and that reflects my skills and experiences.

Sounds like good news. Delighted for you Mr Pendejo

Could you look for something even better in the time before your start date? Next April seems a long time away

Don't downplay the qualifications you have got since leaving school.
It shows a willingness to learn new things and a determination to complete the course and get the qualification.
In companies I worked for, if someone applied with an Open University degree we gave them an interview even if that degree was basically useless. It showed the individual had taken on a challenge for 3 years, did the research and learnt the subject to a level of excellence good enough to get the degree.
I have always seen an Open University degree as harder to get than one from a normal university.
It's a good way forward but it's a really tough one.
Good luck with getting a worthwhile job.

TWTD is on the spectrum of being a town fan... Which is the disability.

As a "victim card", supporting town must qualify.
Fingers crossed that no-one from Bury, Macclesfield or Bolton are going for the same job.

Trust me I don't downplay any post school qualifications... I'm still proud of City &Guilds in the "Marketing & Supply of car parts" for which I got a merit and was given a camera by my employer.

I just get the feeling employers don't see my versatility looking at application form or CV.

At 64, my UC work coach told me to be more creative with my CV.
No DOB, no dates for school/college just the qualifications and miss the first 10 years of employment. This made me look 50ish.
I chased up an application with an agency and he told me they were looking for someone much younger!!!! The agency only put forward their top 5 people - I wasn't in that top 5.
If you are applying through agencies then your CV will never reach an employer because the agency filters them out.
Apply directly to employers is the key.

I've done some stuff with the OU and believe me, you're pretty much on your own.

I got a half hour phone once a week, sometimes in a fortnight and that was it.

I could ask the odd query by email but it's not the same.

Mind you, I did a correspondance course back in the day, as it were. You got a bit stuck on something so you wrote a letter, posted it and waited for a week for your reply!

Madness I tell you.

(Good luck with it all Pendejo).

Another good reason to apply directly to employers is that this would save the employer a scandalously extortionate agency fee - normally equivalent to 3 months gross salary. This might well be a deciding factor for an employer faced with two or more similarly-suited candidates.

My (admittedly limited) experience of recruitment agents from "t'other side of the fence" is that they certainly did not filter the applications that they put forward to me. I used two separate agencies at separate times, and despite my sending them a short list of minimum requirements, they both sent totally unsuitable applicants for interview. A complete waste of time. After the second experience, I would include a standard "no agencies" at the end of each job advert - not that this put them off mind!

You make a good point about the Open University degrees in your earlier post.

(Edited to say good luck Pendejo)
