Garbutt and Skuse 23:00 - Oct 9 with 1314 views | Trequartista | Two stories that just sum up Ipswich Town these days. First we have Garbutt who did very well for us last season. Fair enough if his agent was demanding Championship wages then he's out of reach, but to then just move on and not even bother to make an offer when he subsequently lowers his sights to League One is just bizarre. I know Stephen Ward has started well by all accounts, but at his age he's probably going to be spending quite a bit of time in the Mark Kennedy Memorial Hamstring Suite. Then yet we again we have a player out for 3 months having an operation for an injury that has gone undiagnosed for 7 weeks. Now it looks like we have no specialist defensive midfielder at least up to the January window. Oh well, beat Blackpool and it will all look a whole lot better again.

If Garbutt was that good, surely better clubs than Blackpool would have been in for him. We move on. [Post edited 9 Oct 2020 23:04]

That sounds like pure club spin. Had Garbutt come here and Ward elsewhere would anyone be bemoaning the fact we 'd not got Ward? And why judge Garbutt on the offers made for him instead of how he actually performed on a football pitch for our club! [Post edited 9 Oct 2020 23:12]

I was. Ward is a better left back. And it's fine to judge a player on the club they ended up at, it reflects how the market views him. He was good going forward for us, and I wouldn't have minded him back. But I'm not fussed that he's gone to Blackpool, good luck to him.

It took about 5 minutes of his first game for everyone to see Ward's a much better footballer.

If Ward plays say 35-40 matches this season at the same standard he has started at, then fair enough, i wouldn't swap him either. I don't think he will. And it could be his last season. I think we could be playing 4-3-3 because we've signed Ward, rather than signing him to fit the system. We have 5 centre-backs and barely any right-backs so would be quite easy to switch to 3-5-2 had we signed Garbutt instead [Post edited 9 Oct 2020 23:26]

Didn't we start pre-season playing 4-3-3 before Ward signed? Why don't you wait and see whether Ward plays that many games and then have a pop if he doesn't rather than crying about something that hasn't happened?

Yeah i'm not denying Ward is a good player, it just feels wrong that you take a player on loan, he's one your best players, he leaves his parent club and goes to a lesser club in the same division. Something's not right there. I think crying is a bit strong, just an opinion on a board of opinions, no more no less.

Garbutt had flashes of brilliance and he tried hard but, in my view, when backs were against the wall he wasn't strong enough and went missing. I get frustrated because I don't really understand the obsession... he scored a few worldies and I think maybe that sticks in people's heads a bit more than the countless times he allowed his opponent to get crosses in or didn't track his runner. He was also out for weeks after he got injured at home against Sunderland last season.

He turned our offer down (and sunderlands). We then signed a left back. ....he then signed for another club a month or so later. There's nothing to see here.

4-3-3 was always Lambert's plan. We also have to remember that Garbutt missed over 20% of our league matches last season, so he had his own injury issues.

He's no Myles Kenlock, it's fair to say.
