In honour of Thomas (and Harrop possibly) Rank Town's loan wingers of the 2000s 10:30 - Jan 26 with 680 viewsArnoldMoorhen

in order of how effective they were for Town.

Giovani Dos Santos (2009)
Andros Townsend (2010)
Jonny Williams (first incarnation) (2014)
Ryan Fraser (2015-16)
Tom Lawrence (2016-17)
Bersant Celina (2017-18)

And should Daryl Murphy's spells as a wide forward (2011-12, 12-13) and Ainsley Maitland-Niles time (2015-16) as (primarily) a wide midfielder be counted?

Then predict where you think Thomas will come in that list in order of effectiveness for Town (albeit in a lower League).

The one that had the biggest impact was Fraser. If he had been fit for the whole season we would have finished in the top 6.

Gio is clearly the best player of the lot though - loved watching him and couldn't believe we signed him.

I still think had the stars aligned, we would have been in a much different place had we signed Alan Mahon permanently.

I would go:

Dos Santos
Fraser
Williams
Lawrence
(Murphy loan spells)
Townsend
(Maitland-Niles)
Celina

I don't think Townsend or Celina were bad for Town, more "decent" in Townsend's case and "Flashes of brilliance, but disappointing after Fraser and Lawrence in the previous two seasons" in Celina's case. Murphy was decent, but most Town fans didn't think he was as good as Walters had been and I don't think anyone saw him as a future goal machine during his loan spell. Maitland-Niles was frustrating.

If Thomas is more effective than Maitland-Niles was in his loan spell then I will be happy.

I forgot him! Yes, effortlessly efficient, unflashily quality!

To be fair to Lawrence, him and Bart effectively kept us up that season so I’d have him ahead of Townsend.

Can I be a slight bore and suggest that the 2000's ended in 2010. Therefore only Santos here qualified as the others are from the twenteens and no the 2000's unless we live in 20 year decades now?

Apart from Fraser and Townsend, I don't recall most of that first list being played as wingers in the traditional sense.

Dos Santos was real quality and Fraser, had he stayed fit, would have been outstanding. The impact of Lawrence and Celina was more as opportunistic goalscorers - when the rest of the team couldn't - rather than the facilitating aspect of a winger (getting the ball forward and crossing). Williams was just too injured to really make a judgment. Maitland-Niles was too young and raw, Townsend useful but impact not as great as hoped.

Thomas, from his brief appearance so far, looks energetic and reasonably effective. Remains to be seen whether that was a "debut bump", but looks promising.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

No you can't. You know what I meant. I could have said "21st Century", which is what I meant, but 2000s is quicker, and I included all the dates so I don't think I have deceived anyone.

I did, too, in my second post with my rankings. The first post lists them chronologically.
