Last night's Panorama on anti-vaxxers 09:14 - Feb 16 with 900 viewsbluelagos

All very disturbing how some medical proffessionals have been spreading dishonest lies around the virus, vaccine etc.

Some have now been suspended by their medical bodies and am sure some will be struck off in time.

The Govt minister response "They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves"

Not really convinced those words quite cut it given the consequences will lead to more people dieing...

Can someone explain why ethnic minorities are apparently far less willing to be vaccinated?
The BBC reported this from Leicester NHS workers.

There has been a lot of disinformation aimed at ethnic minorities by anti-vaxxers. For instance distribution of material saying the vaccines aren't halal or the targeting of Jewish areas comparing the vaccine to experimentation in concentration camps.

They have a lot to answer for.

It is worrying that NHS workers are refusing it though, you would hope the anti-vax information wouldn't get to them.

I don't know the full reasons, but speaking with my wife who is mixed race and her family members, it stems from distrust from generations before that had major issues with forced vaccines, Trust is particularly important for black communities that have low trust in healthcare organisations and research findings due to historical issues of unethical healthcare research.

Less trust in the authorities will be a factor.

Which given many people of colour have bad expereinces of

An institutionally racist police force.
An institutionally racist home office.
Barriers to entry re careers/employment opportunity due to colour.

was always likely to be an issue imho.

I'd also throw in lower educational attainment will be a factor too.

Sure there will be some proper studies on this at some point.

From what I've heard and read, a lot of it comes down to having less trust in the authorities and lack of penetration into tight-knit communities. Plus the consumption of alternative information sources, including rumours that the vaccine was manufactured using materials derived from animals forbidden for consumption in certain cultures.

The educational attainment itself being a function of discrimination, with schools in poorer urban areas - where there might be preponderance of ethnic minorities - often being less well funded and supported in proportion to their particular problems.

There's quite a lot of 'soft' prejudice in healthcare as well. I can count off any number of lectures, training course, etc I've attended where descriptions of what deteriorating patients look like is is about assuming your patient is caucasian('they go blue', 'look for flushing of the face', etc) and very rarely what to look for in unwell non-white people in terms of appearance.

There's very little education out there for treating stuff like sickle-cell crises, for example, as well.
