' In studies, Zolgensma has helped babies breathe without a ventilator, sit up on their own and crawl and walk after a single treatment.'

Wonder drug indeed.

Wow!

However, how does a drug end up getting such a price tag? I wonder how much actually got paid and exactly how much came from what sources.

Very best wishes to that couple and child but can't help think about the other 60+ each year who don't. Can't possibly imagine what that must be like as a parent knowing there is a treatment out there that is just out of reach.

Development of drugs is extremely expensive, and as you point out, the market for this drug is extremely small.

Yes. It was partly a rhetorical question but also one based on the fact that any drug company must realise there is a limit to what will get paid.

Selling a certain number of doses for a hefty fee is surely better than not actually selling any at all. Hence, also a little curious about how much did get paid. I guess there could be very significant manufacturing costs involved as well, especially with the gene technology involved here.

Development far more expensive than manufacturing, but yes that might be significant as well. It costs billions to take a drug to market, and you only have a certain time window to sell it before the patent becomes generic.
