Cases and deaths seem to have flatlined don't they. Which is good news compared to some of the worst case scenarios we were talking about a few weeks ago. But still, we're losing 90-100 people a day, day after day, and nobody seems to bat an eyelid about it. I can't get my head around that. Imagine a Hillsborough a day, or 4 Manchester bombings a day and nobody caring and no media showing any interest (other than the sterile reporting of the numbers of course). When did we become so desensitised to the impacts of this virus? it's really sad that we've normalised it.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Good post. The leading news story right now is that 6 people have died in a tragic shooting (not trying to downplay that at all) and yet nearly 17 times as many people are dying of covid every day.

Looking at the link in the OP, I was quite surprised by how high the number of cases are in NI and Norwich at the moment. With the Olympics and the events in Afghanistan, I've clearly not been paying much attention to the covid figures from my cocoon of late.

True. Although it's still significant numbers where covid is recorded as a cause on the death certificate. Around 50 or more per day. Nowhere near what we had before the vaccines of course, but that's still 50 per day who would otherwise be here.

....around the number of patients that caught covid in hospital are pretty damming.

During the first wave, on average, 11% of the hospital patients with covid were already in hospital for another reason when they caught it.

In some hospitals this figure was as high as 25%.

Grim.

100 people dying in the whole of the UK within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test is absolutely feck all - especially as it is not beyond the wit of man to suggest that many (I daren't say nearly all of them in case I get a bad thumb) died of either old age or other conditions but had the Covid at some point during the past month.

Figures from ROSPA say that 115 people die every week in home accidents

....900 people die each day in the UK of Cancer and Heart Disease.

The figures don't compare.

Some people love a good statistic and they love a bit of bad news.

When my dad was taken to hospital with a brain tumour he caught the norovirus. Aside from the norovirus and the brain tumour he was relatively healthy.

It must be a big thing in hospitals as I got to realise that there were various wards closed all the time because of norovirus. In fact whilst visiting dad my mum got it, sh1tting through the eye of a needle she was and throwing up all over the place at the same time.

Let's face it, a hospital is a giant petri dish. They can't keep noravirus out so how can they be expected to keep a brand new coronavirus out?

Sh1t bloody happens - especially, I might add, in the case of norovirus.

The map doesn't really tell that story.

Rates per 100k people in big ol' empty Cornwall isn't really the same as the rate per 100k people in central London, so to colour them on a scale is misleading.

A further thought I have had is in relation to Covid 'test events.' The Euro matches at Wembley and the Latitude Festival were abject failures so what happens next? Pretty much nothing it seems.

Yo Stevey

I haven't heard about Latitude problems, what happened?

Personally I don't think we can do anything but to follow what we are doing. Open up, put the brakes on, open up, put the brakes on - repeat to fade.

East Suffolk has been in peak Covid ever since. Got a mention in the Eadt and know lots of people locally who caught it there. I am not sure any more brakes are getting applied.

Thing is - surely it's ok to have covid if you are not hospitalised or die?

If the jab does its job then it's doing its job.

Covid is highly infectious, we can't stop that, all we can stop is people getting seriously ill. Hopefully, if we can keep serious illnesses at bay, we have succeeded.

I know in the past there has been all the stuff about Covid being like the flu but if we can make it like that then surely it's a result.

Everyone is still guessing about everything. Initially it was said the WHO should be listened to about the fact that the virus jumped off a bat to a pangalin and then on to Callis (or something like that). Yesterday the WHO said that it came off a scientist who was taking the bile from bats for research purposes.

We just gotta deal with it man.

Maybe the gubberment should push this message then rather than encourage it by default.
The messaging inconsistency is mind boggling...and I am easily boggled.

Government is complicated and being Prime Minister doesn't mean you can do what you can or want to do - unless of course you are lucky enough to be in a dictatorship.

People may love or hate Boris, they also might love or hate covid policies - all of which may be in the future determined right or wrong.

I think one thing is nailed on though, when Boris is ousted and he can then sit on various company boards, fanny around commanding £1m a speech and write his volumes of memoirs for a fee that will dwarf his current £330k pa break even figure, he will undoubtably say that he didn't want to ever fully lock down - which he didn't (and doesn't).

Now I am pretty much in the middle, I think that we need(ed) some form of lockdown but we also need to be told exactly the real facts - as they know them, rather that some maladjusted bullsh1t.
