'Richardson is the brains' 12:07 - Sep 12 with 1495 views | tractorboy1978 | Is an unfair comment I've seen several times, but it's clear as day that as a former defender he was vitally important to organising and coaching that back 6. It's not like PC teams have historically been gung-ho 'we'll score more than you' - it's always been built on a solid defensive base. You look at the 3 league titles he's won and the goals conceded (below) and we've conceded more than half/close to half of the total goals conceded in just 6 games! 2017/18 - 29 goals - Wigan 2016/17 - 40 goals - Pompey 2013/14 - 40 goals - Chesterfield

However, Cook knew what he needed in an assistant manager when he hired Richardson, and he needs to do it again now. I don't think Cook is a spent force without LR by any means, but he clearly needs something

I suspect that the problem is that Cook doesn't seem to recognise that he needs someone with the right credentials to help the team defensively. He has had long enough, knowing that Richardson would not be available, to find someone to replace him. He hasn't done that yet, and doesn't seem to be planning to do it either. He is dismissive of the poor results of last season, insisting that the fix was a player clear out. Then it was/is a gelling issue this season. A new GK has been brought in to replace his previous replacement. However, if we got sufficient numbers behind the ball with the right shape, marked tighter, were a bit more aggressive generally, and each player knew their job and that of the other players around them, helping to boost confidence in themselves as a strong defensive unit, we would cut out most of these goals. There were no prior successes under Cook solo, only under a Cook/Richardson management team. Hopefully, that dawns on Cook (and/or Ashton/MOL), and he recruits an experienced assistant with impressive defensive coaching experience PDQ.

I've said this from day one on several posts, from the day we didn't get him and a very good number two, we were in trouble,

Change the record ITFC you're so fookin boring.

'Richardson is the brains' on 09:31 - Sep 13 with 774 views | itfcjoe | Wigan this season have played 6 games and got 13 points, conceding 4 goals - after a massive player overhaul. Sunderland, Rotherham, Wycombe, Charlton, Pompey and Doncaster 5 of those teams you'd expect to be in the top 8 or thereabouts at the end of the season. And then you look who we've played; and then you look at who we played in Cook's 16 games last year - it's nearly all bottom 8 teams and we can't win a game. Has Cook achieved even one genuinely impressive result in half a seasons worth of games as yet? Our 4 wins last year were against Bristol Rovers at home (24th), Plymouth at home (18th), Swindon away (23rd) and Fleetwood Town at home (15th)

Difficult to see how the situation changes since we don’t have a magic wand. Suspect Cook’s contract gives him the final say over all staff appointments. The Marcus Evans legacy.

It's not even just the teams we've beaten but I struggle to recall genuinely encouraging patterns of play on a regular basis. Against Morecombe there were promising signs but since then, with the sole exception of utilising Burns pace on the right, we are back to individuals putting together moves to create our better play rather than patterns all over the pitch. That Bristol Rovers win last season, we scored two in the first 10 minutes with two up front and then didn't start a match with two up front despite a dire lack of goals. For all the mockery of the 'football being better' under Lambert, the first couple of months did see a real improvement in how we were playing, just one let down by being crap at both ends of the pitch. It was nowhere near good enough but hard to see that this current mess is any better.
