New laptop advice 10:54 - Dec 5 with 818 viewstractordownsouth

My laptop has decided to be problematic so am thinking of getting a replacement. I recently had to replace the hard drive and now the space bar plus the n and b keys don’t work unless I bash them. I’m in my final year of uni and need to get a replacement very soon because I have deadlines. My plan is to take my current one into Curry’s later to see if it’s a good idea to get the keys replaced or to get a new one.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement? Ideally it’s going to be for uni work (and for whatever job I do after I graduate) with a bit of streaming, so no games or anything.
I keep reading about SSD and RAM storage but don’t really understand what either means. My current model (Lenovo) is 64GB SSD and 8GB RAM. I’m thinking of maybe upgrading to a 128GB but not entirely sure what that means.

This guy does good laptop reviews:

It depends how much you are saving on your laptop, if 64gb wasn't enough space for you documents etc. get 128gb or maybe even an 256gb SSD. Don't bother with a hard drive (HDD) in a laptop. And aim for 16gb ram which will allow you to run more applications with less slow down.

Keep away from HP. High spec, poor build computers.

Depends upon your budget.

The M1 chip in the Apple laptops is outstanding but expensive at circa £1k. The new iPads are also powerful enough to work as laptops, too.

Chrome books are a much cheaper option. Google’s Pixelbook Go is the cheapest top-ranked laptop on Which?

If you go for Windows, bear in mind Windows 11 is being rolled out now and you’ll need your machine to be compatible.

I switched from Apple to Lenovo and kind of regret it, mainly because of battery life which Apple wins hands-down.

Your hard drive should be SSD and I think 256gb is the absolute minimum, unless you’re going to use cloud storage. 8gb RAM is decent.

Good luck!

Depends what you actually end up doing for work and what the demands of the typical programs you end up using are.

All companies I've worked for have provided laptops. The programs we run require 8GB RAM to run, but can't hurt to future proof and get 16GB RAM if they are at prices you consider to be reasonable.

Most of our storage is in the cloud, so 64GB would have been fine. But think my current work model is 128GB or 256GB.

Like I say though, depends on what you are doing for your work.

In terms of streaming, I haven't come across a computer that is bad at it nowadays.
