7/10 allot gooder than wot I would of thought.

Exams are getting easier aren't they? It is ridiculous the level of grammatical terminology primary school children are expected to know now. I get that good literacy is very important but knowing the terminology is not the same as good literacy.

9/10

I got number 5 wrong and put 'subordinating conjunctions' as my answer instead of 'preposition'.

I probably should know better but clearly didn't.

The thing is, they simply didnt teach this stuff when I was at school.

And rightly so, imo. There is very little to gain from knowing how to label parts of speech. Much better to enjoy reading and writing and learn how to actually use the language than to drily pick it apart and learn to label things by rote.

They're just parts of speech.

If someone is learning English language how can it be pointless to understand how sentences are structured? It's hardly a modern concept.

I'm amazed they didn't teach the difference between nouns, adjectives and verbs in English when you were at school

That school needed reporting.

*Edited for poor English, of course.

While I don't think it's necessary as a native English speaker (like you, I wasn't taught most of the stuff mentioned in that quiz beyond the basics of nouns/adjectives/verbs), I think it's very helpful to know the theory of how a language functions when you learn a second language.

I taught English abroad and had to do a course before starting work in which I learnt all the stuff in the quiz (10/10 btw). At the time I was trying to learn Hebrew and having a more technical understanding of how English worked really helped with my Hebrew learning. I wish I had known all that stuff when I was learning French at school.

It is totally unecessary. It is just putting labels on things. Part of the conservative back to basics approach one suspects.

I broadly knew what adjectives and verbs were. But knowing what is a preposition, and ultra specific labels and tenses? Just isn't needed and makes English a chore and a rote learning exercise.

7/10, but I expected to do better as I have a relevant degree! My excuse is that the terminology has changed over the last 40 years...
