A nice irony that the charge is embezzlement. Not that I doubt that Putin's worth of about £160 billion wasn't paid for out of his £100k salary. I'm sure that's the case and he's just a very thrifty saver. Presumably he stayed with his parents rent-free when saving for the deposit on his last £200m palace. Def info.

I’m amazed he’s not been bumped off already. You know, a heart attack, Covid maybe, accidentally hit by a falling concrete block, tried to learn to fly using feathers from the prison cook house, killed wile escaping to go and see how high Salisbury cathedral is etc etc etc. Either way, he needn’t worry about future employment or ever going home.

It’s what Putin and co do and it’s very effective. Just as killing people they don’t like in foreign countries is along with the gradual swallowing up of what they consider their territory. It will continue and will succeed.

The power these people have.

You'd think this behaviour would long be consigned to history wouldn't you.

It looked as though Russia had come such a long way and then, I don't know enough to know why it changed course so drastically.

Navalny is a brave man.

I’m not certain that it will succeed though, he’s getting old and more paranoid. Time to cut down in the Russian laundromat in London.

Because the direction Russia went in after the fall of the Soviet Union was not a particularly good one.

Under Yeltsin, corruption reigned. State organisations and properties were handed out to those who became the oligarchs. Things were allowed to run down, including the armed forces. International status and prestige plummeted. Full employment in the USSR may have been a sham, but it was better than being unemployed and still having to queue for food in the new capitalist paradise.

Then along comes the classic strong man, Vladimir Putin. Restores pride in the nation. Nobody's fool on the international stage. Gets important things (the military) working again. Who wouldn't love that, in comparison?

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Navalny is 45, looks 65 but having been poisoned (in Germany but shhhh, let’s not offend the Russians), starved, beaten and imprisoned, the ‘good look’ isn’t going to be for him. Just an incinerator or a hole in the ground. Nobody cares.

If you mean Putin, he’s a fit 69, clear in what he wants to do and unlike Biden and co, he has wotsits. The west, to use Mick McCarthy’s expression is ‘milky’.

Navalny doesn’t rate the front page any more, he can be disposed of. It’s how Russia does stuff.

Why would Putin bump off an enemy?
Keep him suffering in jail.
When he's near the end of his sentence, invent another crime and give him another 10 years.
What is happening to Navalny is what will happen to you if you cross Putin.
I see SwanseaBlue in his comment above has been very brave indeed. He might want to revisit that and tone it down a bit. Russian eyes everywhere.

Because Navalny has supporters. Ash or a remains in an unknown hole in the ground or rubbish tip has no supporters. It’s crude but effective. Look at any totalitarian regime, it’s how it works.

Fair point.
How many martyrs, if asked if they wanted to die for the cause, would have said no.

Oh, as a total coward I’d have said no before being asked the question before being away on my toes. I’d have sent Putin Christmas cards and everything. Shoes cleaned, the lot. Some people are extraordinarily brave.

It's not as clean cut as that, Sergei Magnitsky for example is anything but forgotten and he was nowhere near as high profile in life as Navalny. Nor Boris Nemtsov.

I just read up on Magnitsky and Nemtsov (I’m sadly ignorant on them). Magnitski died 7 days before he was due to be released. Bad luck eh? Nemtsov got 4 in the back a few weeks after expressing fear that Putin might have him bumped off. 5 Chechnya’s patsys were served up to take the blame.

It doesn’t do to take on Putin and if you do, it’s best to cash your pension in because you aren’t going to need it!
