Is it just a case of peak despot personal ego massage..If he was taken out are there others in the wings that would carry on in the same direction?

He's a fascist along the lines of Hitler, and has slowly turned into a completely crazed despot. One minute he's all I won't invade we will continue talking, next threatening the world with nuclear war.

He has been getting the Russian economy into a position which can withstand sanctions, probably hopeful that when it comes to sanctions some Countries will step back from the toughest, same as they did after they invaded the Crimea. The world is also just coming out of COVID and the financial impact of that, making it even more likely a lot of countries won't want to hit Russia hard with sanctions as they will also impact them indirectly. That will be the main problem if we block them completely from the SWIFT banking system it will also hurt other Countries, I will be surprised if Countries like Italy agree to Russian exclusion from SWIFT , but hopefully I'll be proved wrong

I guess all the chess pieces aligned

Its a moment in time opportunity when two of the main opposition players, UK and USA are being run by fools.

He is like a toddler who is pushing the boundaries to see what he can get away with knowing there will be little to no repercussions.

Ukraine will be left to fend for itself as no NATO country will do anymore than send aid and weapons.

Although, he'd have been even more quids in if his man Trump was still in office, but it was a good, off-the-wall 'but Labour' there.

To your second question, there very probably are. The only question is whether they would be as effective and be able to gain the same support, in order to secure as much control of the state as Putin has.

Certainly he is not unique in wanting to regain "lost territories".

Only way is to see these sanctions through to the end. Bright side is that we're probably going to learn to be less reliant on oil and gas by that time.

You definitely look at this photo and then think 'blimey, that's some seriously internalised homophobia' when you think about his record on LGBTQ rights in Russia.

I think there’s a lot in this suggestion:

This has been long planned, the US intelligence briefing was pretty good as far back as November.

As to your second question, there are certainly people who sympathise with his desire to hit at the West but they are maybe not so desperate for a war. As with Stalin, it was only when he died that the Politburo started to fight for the succession.
