Talk of celebrity cricket matches reminds me of a game played at a cricket pitch near Sidegate Lane Primary School. It must have been about 1972 or 1973, and I remember Colin Viljoen in whites, but I can't remember any other players there.

I remember going to watch training when it dont on the pitch next to next to the ground. The attackers were practicing volleys, badly, and most of the balls ended up in the car park of the churchmans factory. Big Al was assigned to go and get them and I think its fair to say he was overly happy. He use of the English language, albeit with a heavy Northern Accent, was 'industrial" made worse by the fact he dropped his cigarette BIG ALLLLL!!!!!!!

I'm sure there's a story, and if it's not true then it ought to be, about Al and some players walking round the pitch before a game in Belfast. There's a huge bang. One of the players goes WTF was that.. Big Al without missing a beat says about a twenty five pounder.

One of my dad’s favourite players too. He actually met him a few years ago and reckoned he was a lovely bloke. I was privileged to see him play many times. He was a much better player than he looked. He could look a bit slow and awkward, but he was neither. You never saw Hunter robbed. He was always in the right place, could tackle, head the ball and kept the game simple. Nobody took liberties with him. Positionally, he was even in the right place to punch the ball out of his own penalty area at the Highbury 78 semi-final! He doesn’t know why to this day. It’s about the only grade A ballsup I ever remember him making. After Mariner, Robson’s best signing and I couldn’t argue if people reversed those two legends. He was a better player than Butcher but a different type of player to Beattie and Osman.

I can remember him taking Malcolm Macdonald out vs Newcastlet with a sliding tackle on a wet afternoon at PR. Nowadays it would have been a red card and probably a very ban but Big Al just looked at the Ref, smiled, pointed at the ball before playing a wonder diagonal pass to burley on the other wing. Malcy had a very quiet game whenever he played Ipswich after that

Whenever a forward left something on Al you could see him pointing. 10 minutes later that player would be deposited into the front row.
