'Being gay is wrong' says man looking like Liberaces wardrobe exploded over him

To be fair, we are now sufficiently enlightened to know that dressing a certain way does not mean that one has a particular sexual preference. Although having said that, some LGBT campaigning Christians point out that taking a hardline literal approach to the Old Testament would mean that wearing wool and linen together is also a sin. Who knew that the holy book of Christians and Jews had quite such strong views on sartorial matters...

Welby has had an impossible task trying to reconcile the different wings of the global church at this conference, and I am sure that he himself would very much have preferred a more tolerant statement to have been possible. It is a great shame that he did not feel able to take more of a stand.

For those who might not be aware, the Church of Scotland does allow gay marriage following a relatively recent vote. The Church of England is part of a global Anglican communion which includes numerous countries which, let's say, does not have quite the same modern attitudes that most in England have these days. I would be amazed if there is not some major schism in my lifetime. The real shame is that the church in modern liberal countries is shrinking, whereas the church in more reactionary countries is growing, doubtless along with its influence.

Shouting that things are a sin is really really not a good thing, even if the thing in question does not stigmatise a considerable section of society, as this edict quite obviously does.
