Shot takers 16:36 - Aug 10 with 1172 views | Daninthecampo | Hi all New poster so be gentle with me! I live in Spain so sadly don't get to see games live and only watch via stream(not yet this season) or BBC text commentary. For those that see the games live, looking at last nghts stats of 17 shots with 7 on target(41%) can definitely be improved, But only Jackson and Aluko from forward positions had 1 shot each on target the other 5 from Leigh,Humphrey, Evans and Edwards all from midfield and wingback positions. Why aren't our forwards making more shots on target? In wrong positions? shot shy? Crap at shooting? I feel we definitely need another striker but is he miraculously going to get all these new chances on goal?
Shot takers on 16:50 - Aug 10 with 1100 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Very simply. They aren't being put in the position to shoot. Colchester parked 10 men behind the ball and so we tried to pass it around them. By the time the ball came into forward players they were crowded out of it. Similar theme to clubs who did the same last year when playing us. We'll be ok, but we've got to find a way of playing against it consistently. Whether through overloads to create space on the other flank or quicker recycling of the ball. We also need to find a way to cope with the high press as against Bolton and FGR we looked flustered when that was being done to us.

Thanks , so just signing Harry Kane won't be enough?! We need to change our approach too? I'm confident we will do well this year
Shot takers on 17:05 - Aug 10 with 1039 views | Kropotkin123 | Welcome. - Jackson had 1 shot and 1 shot on target. So nothing wrong with his shooting last night. No idea why people think it was his fault we lost. Objectively stupid observations. - Aluko had 2 shots and 1 on target. So could have done better, but not dreadful. - John-Jules had 3 shots with 0 on target. So he needs to do better going forward. - Chaplin had 2 shots with 0 on target. He came on for with 20mins to go and evidently didn't find his shooting boots. - Outside of our forwards, Humphreys had a night to forget in front of goal. He sky'd two great opportunities. His record was 4 shots and 1 on target. But he is 18 and from the academy. This was the perfect place to give him the time and opportunity to make these mistakes. I'm glad we are still giving our most talented prospects the chance to grow and develop in a first-team setting (either here or on loans). Why aren't our forwards making more shots on target? In other games they are. Ladapo had 5 shots against FGR. Harness had 3, Chaplin 2, Aluko 2, Jackson 1 (in 16 mins). In wrong positions? shot shy? Crap at shooting? You are trying to draw reasoning from one game, and they don't make sense when applied across more than one game. Ladapo was wasteful against FGR 5 shots, 1 on target, but he did a lot well. Morsy played in Humphrey's position v FGR. He had 5 shots, 3 on target, and 1 goal. If Humphreys had taken his two chances, we'd be talking about what a great prospect he is and how Harper was lucky his mistake didn't cost us. I feel we definitely need another striker but is he miraculously going to get all these new chances on goal? Me too, but maybe not for the same reasons. Why wouldn't a better striker get more on target? [Post edited 10 Aug 2022 17:08]

Its not about the approach. The approach is good and just what we need, but we need to be a bit more savvy when it comes to who we are playing is all. A prolific striker will help, but we've also got to be able to go through the gears a bit more. Its all very well playing from back to front through the thirds, but if that enables them to get set behind the ball then sometimes we've got to bypass the middle third to catch them unprepared. It's about on pitch decisions as much as anything.

It's too early to tell really. We have adjusted our approach somewhat - we're taking more speculative shots (averaging 20 per game across the two league games at the moment), looking to move the ball forward much faster and we've stopped recycling the ball in the attacking third quite so much. Thus far, it's probably resulted in enough chances to win games, but only barely, leaving us vulnerable to indifferent finishing and defensive lapses. That might just be the limits of the system, it might be the limits of the players or it might just improve through familiarity, training or something more intangible (form, confidence, mentality).

One feature I noticed last night with any player taking shots (a rarity all night from us as we attempted to pass the ball into the net through a very well marshalled Col U team!) was that every Town shot taker displayed very poor technique- they were ALL leaning backwards when took the shot - hence skying it. Some shooting coaching wouldn’t go amiss I think….

I've seen Humphreys hit the ball very nicely, so I doubt it's technique. Can you teach composure>

Thanks after 10 yrs of reading this forum i finally joined as i'm confident we will have a very good season so I'm not trying to be negative. I chose last nights stats as they were fresh in my head. The FGR stats read better but 13 shots from the front 6 out of 22 and 5 on target from the 10, i would still expect those figures to be higher. I'm happy though that we have a goal threat from all over the pitch and not just relying on the forwards. I agree a better striker should convert more i was thinking more of him getting more opportunities to score | | | | Login to get fewer ads

No a very smelly Camembert is my fave, an aged Manchego is nice but it still doesn't beat a good mature cheddar
