Our press and intensity off the ball 19:06 - Aug 13 with 1120 views | Dubtractor | Obviously it was great to get a few goals today, and the way we picked them apart at times was a joy to watch, but the thing that really sets us up is our press when the other team gets the ball. It has been apparent in all 3 games so far, and we just stop teams even getting a foothold of possession, shown most starkly today that we forced a passing team to play panicked long balls time and again. We must be bloody horrible to play against!

Our press and intensity off the ball on 19:11 - Aug 13 with 1075 views | clive_baker | Absolutely. It’s very noticeable in our play, almost Liverpool esque although clearly not to their standard. Turnovers in the opposition half will be a key measure and I’m sure we must be right up there in that respect in the EFL. So crucial to allow us to win possession much further up the pitch and start from a more dangerous base. We’re such a fit team, you have to say the ‘infrastructure’ changes that MA has overseen are certainly showing now, what with best in class medical and conditioning. Such a far cry from corner cutting ME. What a car crash if a club we were. Most of those players really deserved so much better.

Our press and intensity off the ball on 20:06 - Aug 13 with 882 views | cbower | Some people think a good press is just about workrate but they are so wrong. Workrate is part of it but to be effective, it needs drilling into the team through coaching. I have no doubt players worked hard under Lambert and Cook but under them both, our press was a laughable headless chicken charge at the player in possession who easily played around it. Kudos to McK and his coaching staff, the coaching is evident.

The difference now is we press in numbers as a cohesive unit and cut off their out balls, more often than not meaning we turnover possession. You would have to be a very capable side to play out of our press, and those sides don’t tend to exist at this level. It’s an easy enough thing to get right on occasions, but the consistency of our play out of possession is significantly better. It’s a far cry from Norwood chasing down a back 4 on his own before looking back and realising there’s nobody backing him up.

Absolutely this, anyone team can run about lots but to have a cohesive press everyone needs to know what they are doing a the right time, itsba skill and takes time on the training ground to perfect. Ladapo presses better than I thought he would, everyone at the top of the pitch got it right today without the ball

Sounds a harsh but effective method of approach.

100%. And you need the players to make that work, it looks like McKenna absolutely knew where the weak spots were for this all round game plan, and they have sorted it over the summer, or at least those are the very encouraging signs at the moment. Great stuff and feeling the club is in good hands throughout, what a far cry from only 16 months ago.
