2019 2020 start 06:37 - Sep 16 with 1300 viewsJeff_winger

We went 14 games before we lost a match in 2019/20
How did we have such an awesome unbeaten start and finish mid table.

Even if we don't make as long of a unbeaten run this season I still believe the start we've had is more stable.

Could have easily been 8 wins from 8 and should have been 7 wins.

Can't wait for the weekend, a proper test

2019-20 was built on sand. Despite the good start, you couldn’t say we were playing particularly well or had a defined style, it was a run that was almost built by accident.
Gillingham away was a good example, kept it tight nabbed a goal and didn’t do much else.

Rotherham were the first team we came up against with a high tempo and they promptly played us off the park.

The two month spell when we didn't win in the Autumn really cost us. We didn't lose loads but far too many draws.

Had Lambert kept things simple instead of overcomplicating team selection then it's hard to see how we wouldn't have done better in that spell.

Some teams get stronger as the season progresses and most get more match fit if nothing else. Some sides just get found out. We were found out. A combination of fortune, fixtures and a little bit of belief helped us at the start of the season. After Accrington and Rotherham HMS P1ss the League promptly sank.

We faded away and lost 7 of the last 9 games before lockdown. Luckily for us, Lambert’s services had already been secured for another four years. Phew….. Thank you Marcus.

Thank goodness that rubbish has been swept away. There is far more substance to the club now and I think we are in with a real shout.

We’ve always had a reputation of being flaky and not up for it when teams got physical or turned up the heat on us under Lambert and Cook, partly due to lack of investment and partly due to the managers.

It feels different now, we have a plan that is fluid and I think it’s partly player led in that KM trusts the players to vary what we play in the game, sometimes it’s 3 at the back then 4 or even 5, we can play 1 up top or 2. Other major help is the 5 subs that has really played nicely into our hands.

Also we can change half the outfield team with 30 mins to go now.

With the quality of our bench, that advantage can't be underestimated.

The tinker man played his part. New Years day 2020 will go down in history, he should have been sacked on that day, not given a 5 year contract!

Yeah, but that contract was deliberately provocative by Evans toward the fanbase, who he held with distain.

It was that season that Mick is famed for creating an "its us against them" atmosphere with the players toward the fans. That can't happen at any club without the ownership supporting it.

Five year contract was literally Evans flicking the V's at us.

Yet we were still top 2 in January. Had we hired Warnock instead of giving Lambert a 5 year contract we'd have gone up that season.

I doubt it. We’d been found out by then.

However, what your first sentence shows regarding top two in Jan is that if you have a good start to the season, you are not going to be far away, even if you get a few bad results.
