It's an if and a pretty big if 12:23 - Sep 26 with 1336 viewsvilanovablue

We beat Portsmouth at the weekend a draw, defeat and win doesn't really look like that bad a run against the opposition we have. I appreciate this is stating the obvious but it does add a sense of perspective.

My main concern at present is that our finishing seems off. We are creating plenty of decent chances even against the better sides and just not putting them away. McKenna needs to work that out.

For now a decent start to the season lets demolish Pompey and we will all be a lot happier.

My biggest concern is the sloppy passing that puts us under pressure in our own half, and attempts to be too clever at times that just give the ball away in good areas. We need a bit more relentless crispness.

Re finishing: we have faced some good goalkeepers who have had good games and made good saves in recent matches. Ladappo's one-on-one that was saved yesterday is a good example. He had no time and no option other than to do what he did. The keeper came out, Freddie connected well, put it to the side of the keeper and on target, and the keeper stuck something out (I think it was his hand rather than his leg) and made a very good save.

And then Walton's header, on another day that would have gone in- fine margins.

Wonder if it’s time to rest Evans and bring in Ball.

The most important game is always the next one!

At the 10-game point we've done what we needed to do to set ourselves up as title-challengers.

2.1 points per game, 6/10 of those away from home, against an even split of top half and bottom half sides. Same again in the next 10 and we'll be nice and established up near the top.

Evans has arguably been player of the season so far.

First eight games he was. Not against Sheffield Wednesday or Plymouth for me.

Against the lower sides yes. But again can't compete when it matters. Loses his head to easily.

I actually think 4 points is a good rerun considering 2 are/we’re away from home. I’ve been quite defensive of us not being able to beat top teams but I would be really disappointed if we didn’t beat Pompey. It would be the perfect time to put that to bed and use as a spring going into Cambridge.

I know we speak highly of Walton and rightly so, but Cooper is also a highly rated keeper in his own right, which he showed yesterday.

Played 10 games, including 4 of the other 5 in top 6 and sit 2nd with more than 2 points per game.

Even yesterday we had 15 shots inside the box vs Plymouth, that's a mental stat really

If we can do this business against Pompey things open up for us a bit. 3 of the 4 after that are at home and the other is Morecambe away.

Yeah, I said on another thread the last two games looked more like some of his Cook performances - struggled with his positioning, over-eager to get stuck in, passing not so crisp.

Games like the last two are the sort you'd imagine Ball was signed for and can see him starting next week.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

More shots and more on target than Plymouth , it’s that fox in the box we are missing , would love Clark Harris from Peterborough in our set up .

Whilst I love ladapo

I'm still very surprised when we spent 1.5 mill on a leftback that we didn't break the bank for another striker.

I know were linked with a couple.. but still surprised we didn't actually do it.

Probably just means there weren't any good deals to be done, I suppose.

You can justify £1.5m on a left back if you think he's ultimately going to be worth more than that. But were there any strikers that were available where that would've been the case? Spending £5m on JCH might improve your promotion chances but it's probably not a judicious use of funds in the longer term.
