There was also a second big one (7.5 magnitude) an hour ago.

Poll: Which of these events will happen the soonest?

This is huge. I was involved in the (management of the) aftermath of the Kocaeli quake 20 years ago, which killed 20,000 and this feels bigger. Impacts Syria as well as Turkey. EQ-proof and retrofitted buildings will be OK, but many will not have been built to the required standard, either because they predate the reqs or because of corner-cutting. Absolutely horrible. Happened overnight when most people were at home, and in midwinter, so reducing the survival window for people trapped.

With an estimated 500,000 people in the UK of Turkish or Turkish Cypriot origin, as well as refugees from Syria and those of Turkish Kurdish backgrounds, let's hope our government doesn't offer merely crocodile tears, and this doesn't fade into the background as the news cycle moves on.

I don't think you need concern yourself in that regard, the UK and it's people and which ever party is in Government has always been at the forefront of providing international aid in money, people or equipment in any disaster wherever and whatever.

But overseas aid spending has been cut from 0.7% to 0.5% of GDP in the last few years, which has meant programmes have ceased. And presumably anything going to Turkey will mean further cuts elsewhere. So I'm not as optimistic as you.

As well as the cuts to overseas aid (lower % of GDP) they have also allocated costs spent in the UK (to help refugees) to the spending - thus further reducing the amount of aid spent overseas.

So for example all the money spent on housing Ukrainian refugees in the UK means cuts in overseas development budgets of similar amounts.
