Gut feeling ..... does a cup final hinder league form? 18:25 - Feb 22 with 914 viewsAsa

It's one of those things that, without any data to back it up, feels like it is true.

I have noticed that often when teams who have been flying have reached finals I have expected them to continue that good run with players all desperate to be involved, but there seems to be a drop off more often than not.

Is it the case that players are worried (subconsciously perhaps) more about being injured or sent off and not playing at the same levels because of the potential for missing one of the big events of their careers?

Newcastle have been utterly relentless all season. They reach the League Cup final and immediately their form drops off a clip. From winning most of their games and conceding 2 league goals in 3 months, they reach the final, concede in their next three, failing to win. It feels to me like it happens all the time.

Maybe it's not even a thing and I'm just recalling the teams that have lost form and not the those that maintained it, but if there's anything in it, as it feels like there is, then a Plymouth v Bolton final in the Pizza Cup may not be a bad thing at all, should Wanderers do their bit.

Can do. Much like Newcastle, the Swans were fantastic under Laudrup until they won the League Cup and then their form dropped right off over the rest of the season. Then the following season they did well in the Europa League but badly in the PL. It cost him his job by Jan/Feb time.

It must be hard to pick yourself up for the mundanity of the league after the immediacy and excitement of one-off cup games. It won’t be deliberate, but fine margins and all that.

Not that cup, IMO.

If this was the other way around we would be laughing at the suggestion. They will be very clear on what is more important.

Truly impaired.

On a side note our form prior to the 78 Cup Final was pretty poor.

Nah. If we genuinely had a chance to get back into European competition we’d be throwing everything we had at it.

It's too early to say if Newcastle's form has dropped off a cliff since the cup run. They drew with Bournemouth and lost to Liverpool, exactly the same results against those clubs in the reverse fixtures, and drew at home with West Ham having already drawn at home with Leeds and Crystal Palace earlier in the saeson

I was replying about Plymouth. Appreciate that wasn't very clear though after reading the OP again!

I'm sure the priority is clear, but given that it is Plymouth and Bolton, rather than United and City, you'd have to imagine that very few of them would have played at Wembley in what's going to be 70,000 - 80,000, some will never do so again.

So whilst promotion is the aim, you do have to wonder if the status of the clubs being League One, with League One players means that in the back of their minds the final will be that big of a deal.
