Football finances don’t make sense, episode #367 12:39 - Feb 28 with 1829 viewsIllinoisblue

QPR losing almost HALF A MILLION POUNDS A WEEK. And judging by the state of their squad this is not down to reckless spending on transfers. Insane.

Is there any explanation as to why their losses increased from £5m to £25m?

Is there some legacy Covid losses in there?

Edit: looks like some big playe sales the previous year. Was that the guy who was sold to Palace?

Last year they made nearly £18m accounting profit on the sale of players - mainly Eze.

I did say they were in a mess a couple of weeks ago and got poohed-poohed.

They also have the massive fine to consider for their FFP breach, which is spread over 10 years.

For further reading, have a browse through recent Loft For Words articles / pre-match previews etc.

QPR aren't unique in this but when your player wages are 124% of your Turnover you're in a spot of bother by way of your bottom line.

You do wonder what is the point of paying out all that money to sustain a place in the Championship with an average attendance of 13,000.

Mind you I guess we didn’t get much more than that by then end of Mick’s reign.

Yeah it just feels like clubs are operating at significant operating losses in the hope they'll one day reach the Premier League, but even then it's hard to make any money if you want to give yourself any chance of staying there.

Its not new news of course but the players salaries are bonkers at Championship level. The revenue at that level isn't too bad in theory, you've got a club like QPR achieving £22.1m, of which £5.6m is Gate receipts. It's not unthinkable that a better followed club (like us) would be around £25m annual revenues in the Championship before any player sales income.

But when you've got a £25m a year wage bill as they have, just for a fairly middling (if that) Championship quality squad, it just feels so unsustainable. That's the best part of £0.5m per week. 30 players on an average of £10k - £15k + staff.

Not really sure what the answer is when your potential to grow revenues is relatively limited. You either suck up the losses, try a build a cheaper squad (but if that was easy to do and remain competitive everyone would be doing it), or trade players really effectively, again very difficult. Probably a combination of all of the above to a certain extent.

I guess it’s sustainable as long as there are willing and naive enablers such as Marcus Evans around to fund the madness. Or if not Evans, plenty of murky global hustlers, scammers and crypto scum out there to keep the boat afloat. What a mad world.

Can't say I've kept up with their fortunes, but I swear 10-12 years ago they were super rich, looking at being the new Chelsea, were putting in place plans to build new a stadium/training ground etc
