They just get more and more brazen on 08:48 - Mar 6 with 888 views | Swansea_Blue | It surprises me how loose this all is still. Honours lists have been controversial for as long as I can remember and nobody seems intersted in tightening things up (because they all hope to profit from it, presumably?). No surprise with the nepotism here - it's what he does. [Post edited 6 Mar 2023 8:48]

They just get more and more brazen on 08:49 - Mar 6 with 878 views | davblue | it's so brazen it's unreal. Quite clearly feels like he can do what he wants, when he wants. Needs bringing down a peg or two. But we as a nation put him in that position, shamefully.
They just get more and more brazen on 09:20 - Mar 6 with 829 views | DJR | It's still nepotism, as shown by the following definition from the online Cambridge Dictionary. "the act of using your power or influence to get good jobs or unfair advantages for members of your own family."

There's almost an unwritten rule in the Civil Service that if you hang around long enough and in a senior position you will get an honour of some description. 2 of my colleagues got honours last year. An OBE for one and a CMG for another. I think there were 6 the year before.

Have you known colleagues who have turned down honours?

CMG, Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, jokingly known as Call Me God, and the even grander GCMG, God Calls Me God. The explanation I have heard for civil servants getting honours is that they don't get the sort of pay that they would get in the private sector. Speaking as a former civil servant who reached a rank that would have entitled me to an honour but didn't stay long enough to get one, I would abolish the whole honours system and would not have accepted one had it been offered. But no one in my office ever turned one down, and I can't imagine there are many, if any, like me. Indeed, those who turn down honours more generally seem very much in the minority, even those who might be thought to be anti-establishment (such as Dame Vivien). [Post edited 6 Mar 2023 14:43]
