Thanks Keno, that pitch was awful wasn’t it. It also gave the lie to the impression that many have that we always played silly passing football under Robson - we clearly didn’t, probably due to that pithc!
And Viljoen was an excellent player

Was there and at the replay at Stamford Bridge. Was really convinced we were going to win the Cup that year especially after beating. Liverpool and Leeds in earlier rounds. The worst I’ve ever felt after a Town game coming out of Stamford Bridge after the replay.

You forgot the stage of pitch and also just how good Viljeon was

I was under the impression that before the club signed Muhren & Thijssen, we were a long ball team but it changed in order to get the best of those two players.

Happy to be corrected if wrong, the early Robson teams tended to play a longer style where the ball went back to front quickly with Whymark, Johnson and then Mariner laying it back for the midfield to run onto. That said we had passers such as Viljoen and Burley and people who who run at defenders Woods
After Talbot, who with Osborne, were the work horses moved on the Dutch lads came in and we started to play through the middle more with balls up up to the front three Mariner, Gates and Brazil who could hold up play, turn defenders basically anything they wanted to!!
Both teams were good in their own ways and both featured incredibly strong back 4's

Certainly on Muhren's debut, a home defeat to Liverpool, the ball sailed over his head for most of the match, and we subsequently adapted our style (as did Muhren)
You have to put it into the context of English Football at the time. There were no teams who played pure passing football. Even Liverpool would mix their stylish football with some long balls.

There kind of was. That season the away fans were to the right as you face it and home fans to the left.
I seem to remember a fence down the middle
I miss the old North Stand
The fence came much later, in 1975 the stand had no segregation. At the end of that season we played West Ham and the two sets of fans stood about 5 yards apart across what was effectively a neutral zone. TWTD

I was actually at the game, sitting in with a load of Aston Villa supporters with my dad in what is now the section for away fans in the Cobbold stand. They'd not long opened the extensions either end of it. I’ve no idea why we sat there, given standing in front of the seating in that stand near the little wooden hut on a footstool was default position for that season - and indeed the Leeds 38k game that followed.
The crowd for the Villa game was I believe 35k, but that’s just going by memory. Villa were better than us for a good chunk of the game, but last half an hour we took them apart. The second goal was brilliant and I remember it as if it was yesterday. Decent player, Hamilton.
