Think they were quite destructive to river banks etc and obviously not native. Wonder if your capybara is a lone escapee or one of many!

As a kid, my mate who lived down the street, his dad did coypu control. Had his own van. Always imagined coypu to be beaver-like.

In ColOmbia, they eat Capybara, it's a succulent white meat. Looking forward to my next Capybara steak in just under 7 weeks. https://es.restaurantguru.com/ Father in law's favourite restaurant

Tremendously destructive. Lots of birds now returning to East Anglian waterways which were formerly pushed out by Coypu (which originally escaped from fur farms). Including the bittern. They also ate a lot of the fish.

I know many years ago there used to be a number of them that frequented the lakes on Purdis Heath golf course. Saw them many times when fishing there. As I remember it someone came along every year to try and exterminate them.

Not gonna lie. Was feeling pretty good about that one. Yet only 1 up arrow. It remains a hard knock life.

Exactly. They were vegetarian, but used to dig out a home in the side of dykes or rivers. Eventually, it would collapse and they'd move home. About the size of a beaver. Capybara is much bigger (same family). A neighbour's Jack Russell brought a dead one back from the marshes one day, interesting.

If those links hadn't been posted to show there are apparently quite a few in this area, I'd have assumed you'd mistaken a muntjac or chinese water deer for it. Muntjac are getting increasingly urban now. Saw one on Tuddenham Road in town about a week ago, I guess that means they're living either on Christchurch Park or the cemetery
