They said that he wouldn't get Ipswich up playing football in the style he wanted. Wouldn't work in league one.

Not with us now.

I'm guessing Norwood. Maybe Pigott or Bonne.

So pleasing that he made it work even if we did a bit more direct towards the end.

It was more we learned to mix some directness with our original style for me particularly once we had got Hirst settled in maybe that was the intention all along . One or two of us had been calling for a more mix it up and play with more tempo approach for a while !

I think the fact we were able to go more direct made our season. We had reached a stage where we'd stagnated a bit, and it was a little Lambertball-ish. I'd say the second half of the Sheff Wed match marked the turning point -- we really stretched them and got back in the game.

Also meant we could break down 11-behind-the-ball teams a bit more.

Personally, I prefer the style now as well.

There's a bit more zip about us now. I think it's just a function of the (lack of) quality of players to play his way. Think of Man City, they're happy playing their way out of trouble from the back, but then have the quality to make a pass between the lines that most other layers wouldn't even be able to see, let alone execute. McK's approach will be easier to implement the higher we go and higher the quality of player. Although the defences are also better then of course, so it's not going to guarantee results.

Being direct can be a part of it for sure - again look at City. They played to their strengths and aren't afraid to go long to Haaland to mix things up once they've sucked a team out of defensive shape.

Mckenna in the interview implied that he didn't compromise on his style. But it seems fairly clear we introduced the faster break and odd long ball to the wingers, especially burns. We didn't look to go long as in hit it high to hirst for him to head down. It was more get in quicker behind the fullback.

I think it was a confidence thing as well. The Sheff Wed home game and Bristol Rovers away game were turning points.
We had nothing to lose after those matches, we’d lost momentum and belief and people on here were even doubting we’d make the playoffs.
Then we stuffed Forest Green and went to MK and ground out a win that was more convincing than the scoreline.
I think we just went for teams after that.
I imagine the direct approach came from McKenna or his staff spotting weaknesses in certain opponents rather than a complete change of tactics.
The Derby counter attack goal and the way we destroyed Wycombe down the right side were examples of that.
But when you’re flying and confidence is high, you’ll always be more willing to be brave and try stuff.
You also have to look at individuals. Burns rediscovered his form from March onwards and Hirst gave us a different physical option to Ladapo up front.
And while Humphreys did very well for us this season, the introduction in midfield of Luongo changed the whole dynamic of the team and allowed Morsy to drive us forward rather than play safe.

It's hard to separate out the influence of the new signings, but I think the contribution of Luongo doesn't get the recognition it deserves. His partnership with Morsy was transformational, giving the likes of Broady the chance to work his magic. We were so much more solid with Luongo/Morsy than with Cam/Morsy. It helped the front players and pushed our defensive line further up the pitch helping our backline too. I lost count of the times we turned over possession with those two in the middle of the park.

That's not a dig at Cameron - he seems to have a bright future ahead of him.

Indeed. Man City are a veritable land of the giants and love a longball.

John Beck was right all along 😃

I think you're right: it's why I'm confident we can do well next season.

The vast majority of our goals did not come from long passages of play/passing, . Mainly from set piece, fast break or playing direct for 2 or 3 passes.

That said, you need a mix of possession and direct, even in League 1. A joy to watch.

We also seemed to grow in patience and not panic if there were no goals from multiple attacks or if we went behind.

I’ve said it before and happy to keep banging this drum, but Morsy in that period where we had no midfielders was exceptional. Having to manage himself in games to avoid yellows whilst also having to walk Humphreys through games (especially towards the end of his run when Humphreys started looking a little leggy).

Just a wonderful player and really grabbed games by the scruff of the neck at times.

Luongo coming in was a revelation too. Suddenly you have two midfielders who can do everything and looked to have utmost trust in each other.

I think a lot of people were calling for change, it had become pretty turgid….
