Still a passing game but a greater willingness to hit Hirst quicker or get it out to Hutchinson. Nice to see the patterns evolving and tailoring our game a little to our opponents. The difference berween McKenna and Lambert or Cook is night and day. I shudder when I recall the farce of Lambert and his splitting centre backs of his first few games!!!!

It is what we’ll need to do more often as many teams will now try and press up hard and high up the pitch. I think this could play to Hirst’s strengths actually, as he seem decent with the ball over the top. He is fast enough and strong enough to trouble most centre backs.

As teams are starting to press us more and higher, especially early in games, we're looking to break that with balls over the top for Hirst and Hutch (and Burns, when he came off the bench) to run onto. Tactical adaptation, intelligent play. Manager and players thinking on their feet.

We've started going direct a lot more since Bristol Rovers away. Clearly and noticably. I think we had a fairly big change of approach after that, though McKenna might not admit that.

McKenna is an artist. Lambert and Cook had been given Paint by Numbers (level 1) for Christmas.

As you say, we're ready to do that early in games as appropriate and then suck the opposition on again when the sting's gone out of them.
