But only today Fabrizio Romano was suggesting he was on his way to Southampton. (Edited as I wrote West Ham and not Saints initially, when very very tired...) [Post edited 29 Jun 2024 9:01]

Wet Spam we’re looking at a player swap involving Walker-Peters but Chelsea have come in for him so makes Downes a possibility for us.

Do you think 15 million is going to beyond Southampton? I can’t see why the swap deal is the only way a deal gets done.

Swap deals are the latest fashion. Just feel we are in with a chance, if we want him.

Not saying we don’t have a chance but expect there’s brinkmanship in play as well.

It’s not a no from me but we can’t be call to go back to players of another era because of the Ipswich link it isn’t the way ahead. Of course, if KMcK and team were set that it all works that’s fine, but the links are more likely to benefit Soton and their attempts to speed up the acquisition of FD, and or demonstrate to others like Cov and Sheaf that we can’t wait forever therefore looking to push something on our side by looking to alternatives. I watched a few of his Premier appearances at West Ham - which were limited. First off he was getting compared to Rice which was a little unfair and incorrect. Downes is a pure holding midfielder enforcer there to break up play and win the ball. Downes did struggle a little and for me was playing in himself. The saints loan and being the key man there really progressed his game, albeit at Championship level. He’s better than Morsy, and has more energy and pace. So despite not excelling at West Ham, in a McKenna system he could do very well for us.
